Best high pressure 45-70?
Sold my 458 Socom (Ar15 that shoots 458 bullets) and am looking to pickup a nice 1886 or ? that can handle the high pressure loads. What do you guys think? Is there any other options other than the Winchester and Browning 1886? I would like to keep the price below 1200$

Ruger single shot I would guess takes the most pressure. I can't understand why anyone would want it other than to each their own I guess.

Within your budget, that is what I would say as well; Ruger #1.joec wrote:Ruger single shot I would guess takes the most pressure. I can't understand why anyone would want it other than to each their own I guess.

Insofar as the 450 Marlin could be considered a modernized 45-70 and be included in the comparison the BLR would be the king.joec wrote:Ruger single shot I would guess takes the most pressure. I can't understand why anyone would want it other than to each their own I guess.
The BLR is chambered in calibers that general 65K+ chamber pressures.
The BLR is actually a lever-actuated bolt action.
The Siamese bolt actions in 45-70 can take a lot of pressure.

Looking for a Lever action, and I have about 600 458 bullets to load up.

As pricedo noted, BLR in 450 Marlin. That's about it. I don't think you could find a Pedersoli 86/71 for $1200, that would run at least another $400 unless someone really needed to move one.Quinc wrote:Looking for a Lever action, and I have about 600 458 bullets to load up.

The Pedersoli 86/71 is a beautiful rifle both aesthetically & functionally.Ranch Dog wrote:As pricedo noted, BLR in 450 Marlin. That's about it. I have the fancy model with the case hardened receiver in 45-70 GVT.
I'm afraid to hunt with it in case I scratch it.
I'll use the Guide Guns to hunt with .......the 86/71 is much too pretty.
They also make them in 444 Marlin.
86/71s right now are as rare as chickens teeth..........I haven't seen another on a rack for sale since I bought mine.
I was lucky to get one from a dealer who was just folding up his shop to retire for $1200 and change tax included.
If you're going to buy the BLR in 450 Marlin get lots of ammo for the cases.
I have yet to see unloaded 450 Marlin cases for sale but the Hornady factory ammo is fairly cheap and comes loaded with Hornady 325 grain FTX and 350 grain FP bullets that pack about 3500 ft-lbs of muzzle energy.
There is only 1 company selling new 450 Marlin caliber leverguns..........that is Winchester with their new Miroku model 94 with a 20" barrel and a MSRP of close to $1500 .
Even at that ludicrously inflated price you will be lucky to find one of these.
If I was looking for a 45-70 that can fire high pressure loads I'd get a Remlin Guide Gun but I'd really inspect & test it thoroughly before closing the deal. I hear they are getting better at the New York factory.........not up to JM standards in regards to fit & finish but passable.
My sources (including this board) indicate that the Rio Grande rifles in 45-70 are loaded with problems.
My RG in 30-30 has been fantastic.

I disagree with that based on my rifle, no different that buying a R92. It will need the same cleanup.pricedo wrote:My sources (including this board) indicate that the Rio Grande rifles in 45-70 are loaded with problems.

Re: Best high pressure 45-70?
I also have to disagree with that since mine is perhaps the best finished gun I've owned in my life that wasn't hand made. I had two minor fixes lighten the loading gate and polish one small area on the carrier. Nothing else done and that took about 2 minutes to do both.pricedo wrote:My sources (including this board) indicate that the Rio Grande rifles in 45-70 are loaded with problems.

Re: Best high pressure 45-70?
If I was a fellow with any expertise or tools and had to choose between the R92 and an RG, I would choose the RG. I don't consider the RG a kit gun like I do the R92. My 454 Casull has turned into a "build your own" rifle. I will like it when it is done but had I seen what was coming, I would not have bought it.
