Does anyone have the Hornady 8th edition? .452 300 gr XTP

Post by scottz »

I need some info from it. I was told that it lists data for .45 Colt using the 300gr XTP mag bullet. I have the load ranges for the powder I have, but no idea what OAL for that round should be.

Mine is the 4th edition. It does have a 300g xtp listed. Oal is 1.585.

Thanks. I accidentally bought the .452 XTP MAG instead of the XTP. Not sure if the specs for it are different other than the crimp groove. I may be limited to using it in the Blackhawk.

This manual does say for ruger Blackhawk or rifle.

I called Hornady and was told for IMR4227 in a 45 Colt the range is 18.7 to 19.5 grains and OAL of 1.655", which puts the crimp in the middle of the cannelure. So it looks like these rounds will be for the Blackhawk. I was also told not to expect a lot of expansion. One odd thing, and I did verify I heard correctly, their data said large pistol primers, not magnum primers.

That OAL would make is a bit long for the R92. I missed the question about the primers but the 45 Colt does just use the large pistol primers. Use them on the 41 Mag, 44 Mag, and 480 Ruger as well.

I've read where a lot of people say to always use large mag pistol primers w/ 4227. I'll load as Hornady says though. I guess the main point is I can use these instead of finding someone else who can use these bullets.

I loaded up a few of these 300 gr XTP Mags to try out, using 19 gr of IMR4227, setting it to the 1.655 OAL as recommended by Hornady. Just out of curiosity, I placed one in the 92, cycled it, and it fed just fine. I'm guessing it must be pretty much right at the limit for what length will work though. I'm headed back to the range on Sunday, so I guess I'll see how well they work then.
