R92 vs M92 ?

Post by kentuckydave »

Why does the choice when creating one's profile have "M92" rather than "R92"?

Yup. I found photos some of the old Rossi/Puma guns where they were referred to as "Model 92" and so far, found one with "M92" on the tang. Thanks.

Since those are rare birds nowadays, perhaps we should be able to list "R92" in our profiles. Yes? No?

I have two "M92" 16 in carbines imported by LSI (Reno, Nevada). Got them just after production started installing that bolt-top safety. In 2018 I acquired one "R92" 16 in carbine imported by Braztech. That R92 can't hold a candle to the quality, fit, and finish of the M92(s). Even the wood on the M92(s) is superior to my Win 94 made in 1970.

I'm finding some reference material to pin down the nomenclature change to "R92".

As of October 2013 (the date of this particular review) the new rifle the gun writer received for review was not marked M92 nor R92, but "Model 92" on the barrel.

So the R92 switch must have taken place in the past decade.

Also found an undated, used Puma/Rossi "M92" (on tang) carbine. No date but made with the safety.

When did they start adding that?

Who has the earliest year "R92" and can you post date of rifle and photo of barrel logo?

You cannot date a Rossi of any generation by the serial number. You can only guess about when it was made based on the features and markings. Only other help is an original owner that knows when and where it was bought. But even that can be deceiving as they were not imported to the US "in order". Based on conversations withe original owner and the julian type dates stamped in several places on my rifle along with the "original Rossi" style features (metal magazine follower and butt plate, traditional rear sight, no safety, ,saddle ring, dark heavily grained wood), mine was made in 1987. When was it imported? Who knows. It's 5-6 generations old so Rossi doesn't know or care either.
