New Rossi 454 Casull

Post by dpowers92 »

Rossi 454 rifle
Range Day 1/ Factory rounds
Shot 15 45lc rounds.
No issues whatsoever.
Switched to 454 casull. Hornady 200grain monoflex
Fired 1 round.
Attempted to rack another round in and the next round would

only enter the barrel halfway.
Same thing for a subsequent 45lc round.

Checked for barrel obstruction. No bullet in the barrel.
Got home took the gun apart. Used a cleaning rod and pulled this out.
The case had separated and was lodged in the mouth chamber right before the rifling starts.

I'm going to guess that was the problem.
The case had separated. Half of it ejected.

Range Day 2. / Factory rounds
Rossi 92 454 casull update:
Range Day firing order.

1. Hornady Handgun Hunter 200grain 454 casull.
Every round fired out of a clean barrel resulted in...case separation. Checked that both parts of the brass case ejected.

2. 10 rounds of Hornady 240 grain xtp fired and loaded perfectly. No damage to the case.

3. 10 rounds of 45lc Barnes Ammo fired and loaded perfectly .
No damage to the case.

4. 3 more rounds of 454 casull 240xtp fired flawlessly.

Results: Either the Hornady Handgun Hunter ammo is defective. Week case or over charge.
Or the ammo is specificly designed only for handguns.

With every other ammo outside of Handgun Hunter the rifle functioned perfectly in every respect.

Pull the bullet from an unfired round. Inspect the inside of the case for insipient case separation. This may be a mfg. defect in case extrusion (the way the case is formed in multiple and sequential press operations.)

When I get the chance I will for sure.
I contacted Hornady explained to them about the issue with the Handgun Hunter 200grain monoflex.
They informed me that those bullets were specifically designed to function in a revolver.
In a longer barrel the pressure spike will be to high due to the hardness of the bullet and the fact that the bullet has no give.

Like I said on your other post. I fired 10 rounds and had no problems. But I do have 100 once fired brass coming. I will load those up with a 300 grn. pill and will never buy the Hornaday Handgun Hunter again for this rifle.
