Anyone using IMR4227 for Colt .45?
I picked up a lb of IMR4227 today with plans for some hunting loads. Anyone have any favorite loads with it? I chose this powder due to the wider range it seems to have. Powders with a narrow range between min and max make me a little nervous.

Re: Anyone using IMR4227 for Colt .45?
I started out reloading the 44 Magnum with IMR4227 many years ago. It was designed for pistol sized cartridges in a rifle. Always worked great for me. Seems to put less wear on brass and guns. The Lyman #47 manual shows loads from a 16 inch barrel that give a 250 gr HP 1200 fps.
Should be a great carbine powder in the 45 Colt.

Re: Anyone using IMR4227 for Colt .45?
Thanks. I found some 255gr Keith style SWC with gas checks that should make a good hunting round, but I'm new at this. What effect does the gas check have that I need to be aware of when using load data for bullets without gas checks? Here is what I'm considering

Also, the Hodgdon online data shows large pistol primers but everything I've read says to use magnum primers.

Re: Anyone using IMR4227 for Colt .45?
If you are using the standard pressure loads for the 45 Colt then adding a gas check would not increase pressures enough to bother your Rossi. Higher pressure loads could go up a bit. I would drop a max load about 5% to be safe. Really, the only advantage to pushing that bullet over 1100 fps would be a slightly better trajectory.

it would keep it sonic to the target.
8 bhn might give some issues [skidding nose slumping] at the higher velocity's even with the g/c on it as a bandaid.
i'd try and opt for about 12 bhn [if that's possible to order] with the higher pressures/velocity's the 4227 will give.

Re: Anyone using IMR4227 for Colt .45?
I have shot quite a few 250 grain bullets out of my Rossi 92 trapper. 24 grains of IMR 4227 and a mag primer was a very accurate load. Excellent hunting round.
4227 leaves lots of kernels though. More you push it cleaner it becomes.Bore snake breech to muzzle easiest way to remove them.
I prefer Power Pistol or 3N37 powders in my three 45 colt rifles
Doc.

I can also get a 260 gr. SWC-HP Keith-style with gas check. (12 BHN). That may be a better choice for use with IMR4227 as a hunting load. What would you recommend as a starting point with that powder and this bullet?

i'd just stay with starting jaxketed loads and go with that.
you have to start somewhere.
i'm more a 2400 guy myself with the regular cases.
once i get into the supermag cases, then 4227 starts to do well.
