Rossi Rifleman

Has anyone tried the 38+ p ammo in the 30 twist barrel?. Curious as how it shot I have a bunch my son picked up with 158 gr RNF bullets. I wondered how it worked with the slow twist,or save it for my revolver.Thanks for any information on this...johnny

I've shot a lot of it in my 92s and Marlin 94. Reg 38sp and +P. It all works good for me.

I can't remember ever shooting any 38 spl in my R92, although I have loaded some of GasGuzzler's 180 gr bullets in 38 spl brass to stay within the "required COAL" of my R92.

I have just always considered than shooting 38 spl in a .357 mag chamber of a carbine would be about the same as shooting 38 special (particularly remember a 38 spl wadcutter episode) in a .357 revolver. I didn't have much fun cleaning out the nasty carbon/crud ring(s)

ps, for what it's worth, II won't shoot 44 spl in my 44mag R92 either

For what it's worth the book I got with the rifle says to not use anything over plus p loads in it. So I guess I'm gonna pass on the 38/44 loads.

I guess I can't get my two dozen brain cells to process your information.

I just assumed that the reference is to a Rossi R92 ... which to my limited knowledge means a .357mag/.38spl barrel.

Your right,it is 38/357 cal. I'm just curious
how 38s worked in it.Main reason
is I just like to cast bullets and
shoot them. 38s being cheaper
than the 357s are. Do you understand

Actually, as a reloader myself, I guess I don't understand entirely. In addition to a few other, I reload both 357mag and 38spl, although very few 38 spl. Considering the components involved, it only cost me a few cents more in powder to just load into 357 brass that fully fills the chamber. By filling the chamber you not only reduce the inevitable carbon/crud ring in the chamber (which will hindering chambering 357 mag brass and possibly cause pressure issues), you greatly reduce the bullet jump to the barrel throat.

If your "manual" recommends to not use cartridges stamped greater than "+P", I would guess they are specifically talking about the so-called "+p+" loads ... I don't think there's a SAAMI spec for "+P+" 38 spl so to be on the safe side the manual is trying to adhere to SAAMI specs.

So, my suggestion only (as in opinion), just light load in 357mag brass and save your barrel.

I'm pretty much with jd.

I have run a very limited amount of .38 SP through my Rossi.
It's a case of putting a few magnums in the gun followed by a few SPs so that the shooter goes from pop pop to bang bang as an illustration to a new shooter.

I'd rather download .357 though for the reasons already mentioned.

I too have shot +P+ loads through mine as well as 38Spl, 38Spl+P and 357mag, all of it shot fine in MY rifle. I use a 358429hp over 7gr of HS-6 ( DO NOT USE MY DATA) and a CCI spm primer in Ni Fed cases that were originally loaded with the same load basically, only from Federal.
