Good .357 mag UNIQUE plinking load for m92 16'??

Post by RAINS42 »

Picking up my 16' stainless m92 next week. De-mothballing my press and need to order some bullets shortly. I've got 3/4th of a pound of UNIQUE sitting around. Can anyone recommend a cheap cast bullet based load for it? Thanks!

Something over 7-grains is going to be a max load. Bullet length matters in determining what charge not to exceed. Measure a bullet length and I can give you the max. The plinking part is something you will need to determine but that is where the fun comes in.

I use 6.0 grains of Unique with a Lee 358-1582R cast lead bullet. They weigh 160 grains as cast. Pretty mild load, but you won't have to worry about the bullet getting stuck in the barrel!

If you are gonna buy some, I have no experience with badman. These I have shot some I loaded 500 for my dads 92 and he and I like them very much( so much I kept 200 of them) here is a link I got him the 158 grain semi wadcutters and they are accurate out of both our 92's I shot around 200 he has the rest not sure what he has shot of them, but if he had trouble I would have been the first to know it.

I use a bullet very similar to Akuser47's made by Suter's Choice, 158RNFP with around 5.8-6.0 of Unique for my wife's Marlin and Blackhawk. She and her female friends can blow thru a couple hundred of them out of both guns faster than us boys can empty beer cans for targets.

They're accurate too. Looks like aluminum Swiss cheese when the smoke clears.

Good morning
Any bullet with 6 grains Unique is going to plink nicely. That is my go to load in any 357 revolver . 7 grains will not hurt any 92 rifle or revolver (unless already scrap metal) and again will be a mild recoiling load.
Just be aware.. you drop a double charge of Unique in a 357 brass and your shooting will come to an abrupt halt. Unique is great powder until you go past it's intended pressure zone. Once over-pressured it will pressure spike and detonate. So if the book says 8.5 grains max... do not go to 9.

Ditto Mike. When loading plinkers with Unique I always use a mini maglight to check each shell in the tray "one more time" before stuffing bullets in the holes. Actually, that's the case with every tray full of brass but I go real slow when checking those miniscule loads of Unique.

6.0-6.5 is a good 357 load with a 158gr cast bullet.
5.0-5.5 grs is super light and acurate in many rifles for 50-100 yd shooting.
it's a favorite amongst the leveraction silhouette crowd in the 357's

Ok roughly 6grains for 158g bullets. Cool. I'm very careful when it comes to loading my own ammo. Bought a box of Remmy green box 125g .357 mag ammo at walmart the other day. Years ago my uncle taught me to inspect all ammo before use. That long ago lesson just saved my butt! One of the rounds had the bullet in backwards! That could have ruined my day! Figure I can get better results from careful hand loading.

Will also need to work up some hot SD JHP rounds too. Will need different powder for that though. 2400maybe???
