Hello,
Somehow I have worn off some of my R92 Brazilian hardwood stock finish.
1) After removing the finish do I need to sand it down?
2) What should I use as a finish? I want a matt finish.

Maybe a little paint stripper or sanding and try Tru oil. I've done a few different finishes on all of my R92s. I really like the Tru Oil

Sanding is never a bad thing. You got all the advice about relieving the barrel & barrel band, yes? I used Watco Danish oil, followed by Bri wax, and got a pretty dull finish. I’m currently on a boiled linseed oil binge, but I’ve never tried it on banana wood. No reason it wouldn’t work, although banana wood is inherently oily, and won’t suction oil finishes as well as walnut.

As has been mentioned some sanding should not be a problem.
Paint stripper in my experience is a mixed bag and usually doesn't work too well on stain.
Wood bleach is an option with stain but tends to be pretty harsh.

There have been reports that the stain on the Rossi can be washed off with tap water.

I'll second that. I would start with rubbing alcohol.

Rubbing alcohol easily removed the finish. I can easily reassemble the forearm band and mag band with no binding of parts so I don't think I need to fool with anything there. Can I get away without sanding the stock?

I would knock it down with 400 grit then wipe with alcohol again. TruOil will be glossy if left alone but if you let it dry for a week you can go over it very lightly with 600-1000 grit or my preference in this case, a Scotchbrite pad.

Do I need to put stain on it before tru oil and if so what kind and color. I don't think the original finish penetrated the wood
