Looking for a bullet for a Rossi 92 heavier than 250 gr
First thing I don't have a place to cast but have been searching for a hunting bullet and load for something more than 250 gr up to 300+- gr in 45 Colt for hunting pigs to deer. I know Ranch Dog had a mold but at this time as stated I don't have a place for casting so that is out. I'm also looking for a load that will work with it preferably a couple of powders. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Powders I have on hand are Trailboss, Unique, Universal Clays, Clays, HP-38, Bullseye, Titegroup, AA#2, black powder, IMR 4198, IMR 3031, Reloader 7. Primers are CCI Large Rifle and Winchester Large Pistol primers. Brass assorted with mostly Winchester and Starline but others.

Re: Looking for a bullet for a Rossi 92 heavier than 250 gr
I believe Carolina Cast is offering my 290-grain bullet. You might check with Jerry by dropping him an email. He doesn't have all my bullets listed on his web page, better to ask.
Next place I would look is Beartooth Bullets. Marshall has several offerings.
Unfortunately, for really pushing a heavy bullet out of the 45 Colt, I would not consider any of the powders on hand appropriate. My preference with the 357 Mag, 41 Mag, 44 Mag, and 45 Colt is Hogdon's Lil Gun. My second choice would be H110/W296 but they will be about 25 FPS slower than Lil' Gun in the 45 Colt. Nothing else competes with these three powders. Accuracy is very good with all three but Lil Gun will still win out in that area as well.

Not a problem and I should of stated perhaps a little clearer. Looking for the bullet to buy, prefer hard cast lead in something from 280 to 350 gr that I can reload myself. Looking for a steady source for bullet with load data available in a standard 45 Colt case.mikld wrote:OOPS, misread post...

Thanks Ranch Dog I was aware of Bear Tooth Bullets but didn't know anyone as actually casting your bullets. Perhaps you will send me your load for the Rossi 92 20" barrel (octagon if that makes a difference) using Lil Gun in 45 Colt as I might try that for sure.Ranch Dog wrote:I believe Carolina Cast is offering my 290-grain bullet. Here is my load, the barrel style (round vs. octagon) would not matter.joec wrote:Perhaps you will send me your load for the Rossi 92 20" barrel (octagon if that makes a difference) using Lil Gun in 45 Colt as I might try that for sure.
TLC454-290-RF, sized .452", Lyman #2
Winchester cases trimmed to 1.282"
Federal Large Pistol primers
Cartridge OAL 1.60"
25.5-grains of Lil-Gun, 1.73cc, 103% case density
1773 FPS Muzzle Velocity
2002 FPE Muzzle Energy
19.72 Ft/Lbs Recoil Energy
I've shot the rifle to date 99 times. 91 rounds for load evaluation and sight in and have killed 8 hogs with it. Honestly, this is not a "shoot for fun rifle" with this load. It is brutal. Almost all the load work and sight in was shot with a Lead Sled. It is a big game rifle with a big game load and every bit the equal of my RG4570.
The Ballistic Chart with my 100-yard zero.

Re: Looking for a bullet for a Rossi 92 heavier than 250 gr
I will be ordering 500 rounds of your 290 bullets, as soon as Jerry gets back to me. Now they come sized to .454 with the GC installed and lubed. Now I've shot .454 sized bullets in my 92 as well as .452 but both lead cast and it seemed to handle both good. Now I see you sized them at .452 using LilGun which I now also have. Do you think I should size them down to .452 or leave them as is. I've never shot a gas checked bullet so have no idea how it will work in my Rossi. Any input would be appreciated.

I also have one other question as you show using 25.5 gr of Lil'Gun but in another place show the max load for Lil'Gun at 24 gr. If you started cold working up a load what would the min be for Lil'Gun. It is a powder I find very little information on it other than 410 shot shells.
