HSM Bear Load
New question on previously asked subject. Hoping i didn't screw up, bought 2 boxes of 325 grain HSM bear load, the description was all about the type of pistols NOT to shoot them with, would it be a bad idea to use them in my 16 inch R92 45 colt trapper rifle? I'll insert Cabellas link, plz help before i shoot them.
Thanks everyone

Re: HSM Bear Load
Don't know about your trapper but I find it curious that the BH is on the approved list but the RH is not....but it seems to be a fairly good price.

GO BLACKHAWK YAY
Those Redhawks have so many moving parts and stuff....and cost a lot too...
If an original Vaq and a BH will handle it I'd bet you're fine but we know very little about factory loaded ammo in most cases.

Re: HSM Bear Load
just a wild guess concerning the RedHawk ..... in the early years of introduction of the RedHawk, several individual copies had barrels blow off ... the RedHawk seemed to develop a reputation for being poorly designed and weak. To salvage the goal of marketing a "built like a tank" big bore double action revolver, Ruger came up with the Super Red Hawk ... to supposedly remedy the (actually non-existent) barrel to frame issue of the Red Hawk. It was discovered some time later that there was actually no design problem with the Red Hawk, rather an inadvertent mix-up with the lube that was used on the barrel threads during factory assembly. Totally wrong lube used on a number of Red Hawks and the stress of installing the barrels to frames with inadequate lube lead to a few broken guns. The problem was discovered and remedied, but the memory of the failures will probably plague Ruger forever. This may be at the crux of the recommendation to not use a certain big bang ammo in a Red Hawk. Me, I'd trust the Red Hawk (those manufactured after the long ago manufacturing issue) to handle anything the Black Hawk or especially the Vaquero could handle. But, that's just me

Head scratcher for sure. Garrett Cartridges Inc. offers heavy loaded 45 Colt loads for RedHawks only. 405 gr @ 1,250 from a 7 1/2" barrel is serous power. Maybe too much fun!

My above comment was mostly facetious as a SA man myself.
(Original Vaqero and BH same frame size right?)

Re: HSM Bear Load
Greetings
I am surprised there is no Dan Wesson info... yes or no ?? DW revolvers are still some of the strongest double action ever made. Maybe because they are long out of production. I have a 45 Colt and that big brute will digest some heavy loads.

Re: HSM Bear Load
I am looking at the 430 grain HSM Bear Load for my 45/70 Rio Grande. The load is rated as a +P load and I am curious if anyone has experience using it in their 45/70 Rio Grande? I am aware that Buffalo Bore lists the majority of their 45/70 Magnum loads as ok in the RG but it is not available in Canada. As such I am looking at available cartridges and the HSM Bear Load 430 grain is available.
I contacted HSM who in turn referred me to contact Rossi. The Rossi rep stated that you cannot use Buffalo Bore, HSM Bear Load or any other +P load in the Rio Grande and you should only use new SAAMI approved loads. I presume this is a legal liability statement from Rossi since Buffalo Bore clearly states their loads are ok in the RG. In any event I would like to know more about the Pressures generated by the HSM 430grain Bear Load and any information on the Rio Grande in terms of Max Pressure Ratings and what pressures they Proof Barrels at?
Any input or advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Re: HSM Bear Load
I don't think any firearms manufacturer would suggest use of anything beyond SAAMI spec ammunition ... and very few cartridges have an approved "+P" SAAMI Spec rating. If there was in fact a SAAMI spec for a particular cartridge, and the firearm was "rated", it's usually either marked on the barrel or in the owners manual.
