This may be one of those stupid questions but its something I'm wondering about. Right now I have about 200 lbs of pure lead and I also have a pretty good supply of block tin. I want to stiffen up my pure lead with some tin. I've seen all the ratios-1:10,etc- but how is that determined? By weight or by volume? Thanks

But adding tin does not do much for Harding the lead. It does a little , but to harden better, and to save that tin, I would suggest you use antimony to do the hardening. and use your tin to make the molds fill out better.

Roto Metals has an alloy called "super hard" that is a high percent of antimony that is easy to use and just a little will harden up that soft lead.

Yep the Castboolits sight is cocked full of info about alloys. One whole forum is devoted to that.
Me I would start looking into buying, trading for but getting soem wheel weights.
Scrap yards, truck tire dealers are good sources. WW will let you get good hardness using it straight and mixing it with your pure. I use a 50-50 mix of the WW and Pure for 85 % of my casting. I add 1% tin if I seeI need to to get good lead filling in the mold.
There are fellers who would happily trade WW for pure lead.
