Do you consider the lacquer thinner to be a useful solvent for general purposes, or are you using it just because of the coating?

JD,
I do a good bit of spray painting with automotive base coat/clear coat type paints. I keep the lacquer thinner for spray gun clean up. So it is always on the bench and gets used a lot for other solvent needs. If acetone, mek, or whatever is closest at the time, then that is what I use. Nothing special about the lacquer thinner.

I wasn't sure if you were using the laquer thinner for general wet patching (in place of Hoppes, etc) or not?

Well, I guess I do. I don't always use the thinner. Most times I just use a patch wet with gun oil, and that is usually solvent enough to get most of it out. I have followed the oil with the thinner, and get just a little bit of black then. It's not like it's stuck in there, and hard to get out. One wet patch is usually enough, followed by a couple of dry ones. But you can dry patch it all day long, and never get but a little trace of the black stuff. Really no need for the hoppes, or a like product.
