Winchester 100 in 308 with Bushnell scope

Post by pricedo »

Just picked up a Winchester model 100 semi-auto in 308 Winchester with a Bushnell Scopechief IV 2.5-8x40mm scope with the COMMAND POST reticule and a carry strap for $450.
The ScopeChief IV was a top end scope in its day equivalent to an Elite 4000 today.
The gun is in excellent shape.
Always wanted one of these.
The Bushnell scope with the COMMAND POST reticule was a big factor in my decision to purchase.

That makes 2 of us.
The barrel is pristine.
Hope the 60 year old hands and peepers are up to it.
Hunting camp buddy of mine has the carbine model 100 with the plain stock and 19" barrel.........the accuracy was impressive last fall in the sighting-in gravel pit at 100 yards with his 165 grain Nosler Partition hand loads.
He was shooting with an original Redfield 4x scope and claims the old Refields are better than anything made today.
He's a buck a year, each & very year hunter and brings home a bull moose every time he lucks out in the lottery so I won't argue with the holder of that track record.
Proof on the target paper & proof on the ground........irrefutable. :D

Nice buy. Had a similar rifle, the Model 88 in 358 Winchester.

The model 88 was the Winchester lever action offering which debut in 1955.......also a very attractive rifle though there has been some controversy about their "lousy" triggers. The one I owned had a heavier trigger pull than I like and the trigger was a bit creepy.........I either sold or traded it quite a few years ago.
The model 100 is semi-auto which came out in 1961.
Winchester didn't make the model 100 in 358 Winchester for whatever reason........probably because the 358 caliber never caught on in North America.
The only 35 caliber with a decent following in the USA is the 35 Remington.
If I find a good Winchester model 88 in 308 with a decent trigger it'll be leaving the shop under my arm.
As I said I had one and sold it quite a few years ago......... I don't for the life of me remember why.......probably a trade. :?:
I like the 308 caliber.......I have a lot of them........bolts, levers, now an auto-loader.
I had a Remington 7400 in 308 that I chopped to 19" barrel. Good rifle. I traded it up several years ago for a bolt.
The 7400 was nowhere near as attractive as the model 100 but did what it was supposed to do.

I have a hunter who shoots one and late it the season it decided to go full auto with a trigger pull. None of the local gunsmiths want to work on it as they are all AR mechanics now. I've read a little about the issue on the internet but don't want to personally tackle it. Does anyone know of a anybody (gunsmith) that might be a specialist concerning these rifles. He would like to send it in to someone.

A M88 358 Win would get my motor running!

There was an issue with the firing pin breaking off and the gun firing full auto before the action was locked which could be detrimental to the shooter/bystanders health.
Winchester issued a recall and will still stand by the recall though the models 88 & 100 were discontinued in 1973.
There are designated repair gun shops in both the USA & Canada that will do the work free and Winchester picks up the tab.
If you want to know if the recall work was done on your model 100 call 1-800-852-5734 with the serial number of the gun and they will tell you that as well as the contact particulars of the authorized repair shop in your area.
The designated repair shops must register the recall work with Winchester in order to get paid.

Only about 800 M88s were made in 358 Winchester. Wish I had mine back. Trigger wasnt good on it. Most gunsmiths wouldnt do trigger work but there are a few specialists who will.

Concerning the M100 trigger problem, I would cal Winchester.

Winchester apparently still honors the model 100 firing pin recall.
Contact them at 800-852-5734 or write them at:
Winchester Firing Pin Recall Notice
PO Box 10 Cottage Hills, IL 62018
If you will send them the old firing pin along with the s/n they will send a new pin and a gift card for $30.00 to cover installation.
Be sure the pin has not been changed to the new style before tearing into the action. The old style pin can be rotated in the bolt while the new style has a milled flat that prevents rotation. The back of the pin can be examined through the magazine well without disassembly.

Thanks pricedo! When we this happened out on my range, we called Winchester and they pulled up the record as to his dad having actually sent the rifle in and Winchester installing the new style pin. Their attitude at that point was "good luck". Like I said, I'm not interested in working on the rifle but I will pass this along.

As to what is happening, the first trigger pull empties all the rounds in the rifle. If you could control it and had a large capacity magazine, it would make a heck of a battle rifle!
