Appreciate the info. I, too, have never had the so-called crud ring. You might be right about the hollow base wad cutter causing that issue.

As I hope I related clearly, this is sheer conjecture on my part, but I can ENVISION how such a thing might occur. I don't doubt that the carbon ring is real, but I fail to understand how it has never happened to me, nor other ardent (as in, won't even TOUCH an automatic pistol) revolver shooters. I guess it's a lot like falling stars. One needn't SEE one, to know that they happen.

I suspect the carbon ring builds up when people never clean the cylinder or chamber, at least on the two I cleaned up anyway.

I would like to offer my apologies to the OP.
Gentlemen, I think we've hijacked his original thread far enough. And I'd like to reiterate that my only encounter, a carbon ring when firing from 38 brass, was due to the use of a slow powder and not using SPM primers. (This was only to be My meager contribution of MY LESSON LEARNED in load development.) I was, at that time, exploring the possibility of developing a 38-44 load for my Rugers and Rossi(s). Other than that particular condition, I've not experienced a carbon ring in any of my Blackhawks or Rossi 92s.
**Note** If you are so inclined, SLix-Springs offers an effective little chamber carbon scraper in several dedicated calibers.
