Gone for a four digit price to Palestine, Texas to kill giant hogs. New owner drove four plus hours round trip because his .44 Magnum 1894 didn't have enough beans.

Congrats. I hope it was a worthy 4 digit price.

As to the buyer, perhaps he really needed to invest in a .45-70 Govt or .444 Marlin or think seriously about a .308/.30-06/.300 WM.

Glad you made out well with it
Big hogs? I dunno, I can't imagine the 454 doin better than the 44mag. Dont think its a case of not enough gun, but more likely not enough accurate placement of the shot. Unless the hogs were flung from a trebuchet. Those can be a little hard to hit......

I'm glad you turned it!

In my 16 years at the ranch, I killed 1623 hogs with a rifle. I preferred the 44 Mag (Marlin 1894P over my R92) over the 444 Marlin and the 41 Mag over the 44 Mag. If I could only have one levergun, it would be my Marlin 1894FG.

Iā€™m noting some disdain for the 454 as a cartridge. Do tell.

I am not sure there's a disdain for the cartridge so much as there is a disbelief that the .454 is going to correct any problems someone has putting down hogs with a .44 Mag.

I can get into some reasons I'm not wild about the cartridge maybe, but it isn't that .454 can't do the job rather more that if .44 Mag isn't already doing the job then maybe a slight jump in caliber and power isn't really the solution.

I am just reporting what the buyer said. I like the bigger hole of the .454 over the .429 magnum but I'm not saying it's better or worse. Never owned a .44 and likely never will.

No slight on you, Gas! I can't speak for the others but I was just pointing out the folly of thinking of 454 might be the cure-all. In FL here, we been known to take hogs with three dogs, and a knife. Or maybe a 22 pistol. Wr got big ones, but they are feral domestic has beens.

Glad I read this post, I was interested in getting a 454 but really after all the comments. I think I will stick with my 44 Mags. I have two Marlins and a flat top Ruger revolver in that caliber. SO I guess I really don't need another caliber to load for anyway.
