Steve McQueen Wanted Dead or Alive
Can someone tell me why he had a mare's leg, probably in 44-40, but the cartridges on his gunbelt are 45-70?

Re: Steve McQueen Wanted Dead or Alive
the 45-70 on the belt was just for prop.
Make it look like he was carrying a powerful cannon on his hip.

Well that's the obvious answer, I thought maybe there was some backstory...

Re: Steve McQueen Wanted Dead or Alive
I sense the entire firearm concept used by McQueen character is nothing much more than a prop.
Seems It sort of represents the 1950's Hollywood version of what emerged as today's AR 15 pistol

Here is where I sort of asked a variation of your last observation...

Just my two cents but I see a whole lot more utility in a cut down pistol caliber rifle than I do in a cut down 3000 FPS .22 since the latter looses about 1/2 to 1/3rds of it's V and it starts with not much mass.
