R92-51011
Hi thanks for the add.
Just recently bought a Rossi R92-51011 here in Australia. There is not a lot of support over here. The Rossi i have is s/s with 24" octagonal barrel in 357. Just wondering what the best way of setting up a red dot on it.Can you do the same as a round barrel? thanks in advance.

Re: R92-51011
Welcome to the forum! Not a lot of Rossi support anywhere except that offered by the guys and gals with rifles in their hands!
I can't really offer much on the base other than looking for a dovetail base that might fit the rifle.

Re: R92-51011
Welcome to the funny farm. If I wanted to put optics on my octagonal barrel I'd have my smith take a piece of flat bottom rail and machine it for mounting screws then drill and tap the barrel for same. Probably in the neighborhood of the current rear sight. Red dot or ler scope either one.

I'm with wheels.
I'd get a shop to machine a dovetail and screw rail that sat on top of the receiver, but not over the ejection area.

Indeed, a bit bulky, but silver is a nice feature on a stainless rifle. They're made for 94 carbines, but maybe you could adapt it. Or if you contact Pearson with your measurements, he might be willing to customize it for you. The big advantage of the Pearson is that is gives you a Picatinny rail, perfect for mounting a small red dot. The Williams or the Weaver only provide rings for a 1 inch optical. I'm kinda partial to tubular red dots, but they're also a bit bulkier than necessary.
The Williams SM-71 base is made for the 92, but it requires drilling & tapping the side of the receiver. Then you need the Williams rings to match. The SM-71 was listed in the Williams catalog as recently as 2017, but it appears to be discontinued everywhere. With a little patience, you'll find one on-line. I believe Williams will make the rings until the Second Coming.
The Weaver 3A base (48403) is also made for the 92, and also requires drilling & tapping for the Rossi. I believe it uses existing receiver sight holes (if so provided) on Winchester 92s & 71s. Then you need the Weaver high bracket with rings (49350) or long high bracket with rings (49340). Maybe they used to make a low bracket, but not anymore.
I know B-Square used to make a side mount for levers, but darned if I can find anything about it on-line. It's not in their current catalog.

Here's a great example of a drill & tap rail on an octagonal barrel:

I have one of these on a round barrel 44mag,and I see no reason it would not work on a octagon barrel. Don't be fooled by the mod94 in the URL

Like many who have made predictions about the Second Coming, I was wrong. Williams rings for the Quick Convertible Scope Mounts are discontinued everywhere.HarryAlonzo wrote:I believe Williams will make the rings until the Second Coming.
