Re: Been A Tough Week
I'm late seeing this, been sporadic on the board of late.
Reminds me of my Beagle when I was growing up. He cornered a possum and got ripped up by it.
Lucky the damage wasn't that bad and the vet could sew him up but he bore the scars the rest of his life from that.
It's always hard when they leave us.

Re: Been A Tough Week
Michael, sorry to hear that you've lost yet another companion, and a real character at that.
I haven't been on this site for a little while, and just now read the news.
I've lost several wonderful Australian shepherds buddies over the last 30 years. They were all bird hunting fiends, versatile for four species of quail up through pheasants, ruffed, blue, and spruce grouse, sage hens, sharptails, waterfowl, and turkeys. They'd even heel and drop a crippled antelope or deer if that was called for. One tried that on an elk that was dead on his feet and didn't know it, but only bounced off the bull's side each time she jumped up against him. That determination actually made me smile a bit!
I visit the graves of two of mine; they are just down by the pond in our yard, resting where they often slept after a hard day in the woods.
Your remembrances of Zeus will likely gravitate more towards the good times as the healing progresses. You're a real blessing to the animals who have known your care. I imagine more critters will find you.
Once again, my condolences. Hope you are doing well.

How'd you get the dog to look at the camera?

Love the picture of Zeus running with your Dad's paper.Ranch Dog wrote:Up until last Friday, Zeus had never missed a day delivering the paper to my dad. As soon as I let him out of the yard in the morning, he bolted the 300 yards to cattle guard where the paper would be laying, snatch it up and bolt the 400 yards to my dad's porch. Rain or shine. He did this since I got him in January.
Once in a while, he would take a detour after a coyote or hawk, but he never dropped the paper until he hit the porch.
How did you teach Zeus to pick up the paper and deliver it to your Dad?

Excuse me butting in but if memory serves he taught himself. If there are more details, we need to know.

Re: Been A Tough Week
The first time we went out to the front in the morning, he waited at the cattle guard while I went across the highway and picked it up. As soon as I crossed back, he snatched it out of my hand and took off. I did teach him how to watch for traffic on the highway. That took only a couple of days.GasGuzzler wrote:Excuse me butting in but if memory serves he taught himself. If there are more details, we need to know.

We would use him the same with DVDs. Sending them back and forth between our house and my dad's.
