Can You Shoot Rifle Only?
Can You Shoot Rifle Only?
I haven't had any luck finding a clear answer anywhere, can you shoot any cowboy action events using only a rifle or do you have to own a pair of pistols and a shotgun too?

Re: Can You Shoot Rifle Only?
I belong to a group called NCOWS. We have 2 gun shoots such as a rifle, pistol or shotgun, pistol. We also have rifle, pistol, shot gun and some 2 pistol, rifle, shot gun. Now due to some physical handicap we have some that can't shot a rifle so the will shoot the rifle target with on pistol and a second pistol at pistol targets. Now I can't tell you much about SASS groups though bigger than NCOWS as I've never really paid much attention to their rules but the do have more classes. We do occasionally have side matches as they are called for distance shooting.BigIron44 wrote:I haven't had any luck finding a clear answer anywhere, can you shoot any cowboy action events using only a rifle or do you have to own a pair of pistols and a shotgun too?
If you are interested I suggest you attend one of the events of either SASS or NCOWS and give it a try. I'm sure they will loan you a gun to try as we often do it for new people. It is a lot of fun by the way.

can you shoot in a side match if you are not competing in a "main" event?

At some of our events you can as they have a pocket pistol, long range rifle and pistol events also. They also sometimes run these as teams also. I'm not much on the side matches personally as I tend to shoot working cowboy which is one rifle and one pistol or sod buster a pistol/shotgun combo.44WCF wrote:can you shoot in a side match if you are not competing in a "main" event?

NRA Cowboy Lever Action Silhouette is a rifle only game. However if you shoot the three main matches you'll need three rifles - a 22 LR, one for Pistol Cartridge Silhouette and the third for the longer range Cowboy Leveraction matches - these three are usually the 22, a 357 or 44 mag and a 30-30 class rifle.

Re: Can You Shoot Rifle Only?
i have shot the pistol caliber shoot and the long range shoot with the same rifle several times.
i used the same ammo on the chickens and pigs as i used in the pistol shoots and then stepped up the loads for the turkeys and rams.
i did have to click up the rear sight for the rams.

Re: Can You Shoot Rifle Only?
At a SASS Match, you would need two pistols and a shotgun to go along with the rifle. At the bigger matches, where most of the side matches are held, you need to be entered in the main match. At our club we try to hold a long range match, monthly if we have the shooters. It is held on a different day than the match.
If you are interested in SASS, the are downloadable rule books on their website.

Re: Can You Shoot Rifle Only?
My club has started doing a montly long range match. We have one guy that shoots his Rossi 92 in 45 LC all the way out to 300 and gets great hits everytime. I'd call up the local club and see what they have to offer.
