.453 Rossi 92

Post by Trad »

Hi Everyone
I am new here and would like to say this is a very informative site. I just purchased a Model 92, I did a throat and bore check, by the instruction given to me by a member here on Rossi, and a .454 diameter bullet looks like it would be the best choice. Would anyone know where I would be able to purchase, a gas check or plain base type bullet of at least 250 grains to see how this rifle would perform. I would pay for postage and any other cost involved.
Also any loading info for that particular bullet using 2400, would be greatly appreciated. This will be my first attempt at reloading so any info would be appreciated .
Thanks Pete

I'm assuming yours is in .45 Colt not .454 Casull.

Moyers offers a 250 gr plain base RNFP from a Magma Engineeering mold for $116 per 1000 in .454 diameter.

http://www.moyerscastbullets.com/pricelist.html

I generally shoot those with 6 grains of Red Dot for an inexpensive, fun to shoot, won't beat you to death plinking load. It generates about 1,000 fps of velocity with good accuracy and good case life.

I've also used 18 gr of 2400 under a 250 gr cast bullet with good results and ok accuracy. My load notes with a 250 gr cast bullet and 2400 indicate I got an average velocity of 1109 fps at 16.0 gr, 1131 fps at 16.5 gr, 1151 fps at 17.0 gr, 1187 fps at 17.5 gr and 1218 fps at 18.0 grains in a 20" barrel.

I've went as high as 20.8 gr of 2400 with a 250 gr Hornady XTP and gotten 1,350 fps out of a 20" barrel, but that's a pretty warm load.

Montana bullet works offers several gas checked designs from 250 -340 grains in weight.

I've used their 250 gr bullet and was happy with it. They are more money at $132 per 500, but they work well - I just don't see much need for a gas check in the .45 Colt. If I want hotter/faster loads in a 250-280 grain bullet , I use my Model 94 in .375 Win with a 280 gr gas checked bullet.

----

My advice for load data is to subscribe to loaddata.com as they have loads of published data, including some of the odder stuff like full power loads in .45 Colt rifles and Ruger only loads for a wide range of bullets.

Yes you are correct on the caliber, M2 45cal rifle with a 24inch octagon barrel.
Thank You for the info on where I can purchase bullets and sharing your loading date . I will be placing a order today. I will let you know how my attempt at reloading goes.
Thanks Pete

Pete, Carolina Cast doesn't list it but I believe he offers my TLC454-290-RF. You might email Jerry.

Yes he does have them RD. He lists them on his home page http://www.carolinacastbullets.com/Home_Page.html at the bottom. They work well for me.

Trad, just get a Lee pot with a Lee 452-255-RF mold and have at it. Mine drop at .454" and it's very rewarding for the soul and wallet to cast your own. I tumble lube them with alox and get no leading, but might switch to straight Johnson's Paste Wax if the results are the same as others who have tried it.
The only problem I have is running out of lead since I don't do demolition work anymore. It's amazing how fast you can go through hundreds of pounds. :D
