I got a Boyds Stock

Post by donhuff »

The finish is great with a smooth frosty shine.
The fit of the stock was ok, and needed a little trimming here and there. I also used some JB quick, since it matched the color of the wood well, and bedded it. They say that the fit may have to be adjusted some, so the misfit was no surprise, and actually you could have used it as delivered. I just wanted it to fit a little tighter.
The fore end needed nothing except for a punch and a little wiggling to get the band screw back in. The factory one is about as hard to get aligned too.

Just wish that they offered a rubber butt plate. This hard plastic one is slick, but the added length of pull and the better shoulder fit is NICE.

I will definitely buy another one, I'd rather spend a little time fitting the Boyd, that waste time refinishing the Ju Ju wood that comes on them. BUT what color am I gonna get next time!!!!!

VERY NICE!

I may have to look into one or three of them.
I don't think I'll miss the rubber pad. I might rather retain the steel.

I also got a laminated stock for my old Remington 788 in 308W. It's the first hi power rifle that I ever bought. Got it in 74-75 best I remember. I'v always hated the birch stock that came on it.

This one fit a little better that the 92 one did. Not much to do to it at all, as far as trimming out goes. I still put a generous amount of JB weld in it especially in the recoil lug area. This gun has always been a tack driver with 165 gr bullets and 50.0 grains of imr4350. I know that's not a speedy combo for this caliber, but this gun likes this combination. It's right on 2500 fps, and if I speed it up to 2600 with a faster powder, accuracy goes down the toilet. I'd rather the load be slow and accurate, than be a fast scatter gun.

I've been a laminate fan for some time, particularly grey laminate, and recently picked up a stainless 16" 92 (.357) with the non-laminate stock. I was debating ordering a stock, but your pictures pushed me over the edge and now I have a Boyd's on the way.

I don't object to the plastic butt pad, but I like the idea of retaining the polished metal plate. I'm not an expert woodworker, so I might see if I can find someone local that could make it work as long as the dimensions are close.

Thanks for helping me spend my money!

Picking up a 788 in 222 Remington in a week. Stock has been checkered, so I may keep it. Heard bad things about the trigger. Is yours the original?
