Optics Help

Post by Yossarain »

New R92 owner here in need of some help. I have one of the new rifles with a peep/brass bead and rail already installed from the factory. I haven't shot a rifle in many years and apparently my eyes are not what they were so am looking for some low 2/3x cost efficient magnification for 100 yards tops, cost efficient being the operative words.
Thoughts on a used scout scope (Leupold/Burris) vs a 2x red dot if there is such an animal at a decent price? I think a red dot with a riser would let me co witness the iron sights as well if I am reading correctly.

thanks,
Kevin

TruGlo makes a 2x red dot. I have 2 one o a Marlin 336 in 38/55 and the other on a Henry BBS in 44 mag. Around here they are under $100 and they have good clear glass.

I like my LER 4X Weaver Scout Scope that RD recommended several years ago. That mounted on a NOE rail took care of my needs on a 44 mag R92.

edit to add .... they are now out of production, I think, so you may get lucky and find one at a real reduced price as "new old stock"

Pretty much snapped up a year or two ago on the NOS market when they were discounted.

I’ll do a Plus 1 on the TruGlo. I got mine for a screaming deal. If you look around, you might find a new one for less than $50, or a lightly used one for even less. One just sold on EBay, but they don’t reveal a sale price to non-bidders. I believe the identical optic is made under the Barska nameplate. I’d be willing to pay more for a bit better quality, but nobody else makes an unlimited eye relief magnified red dot.

My alternate optic is a Swift 2X20 LER, a clone of the Leupold M8. The old M8s are very nice, but very pricey. Swift scopes aren’t very common, but good quality and reasonably priced.

Great information here, thanks!
The used LER scope market is confusing on the ebay but I have a few i'm watching. There is a Burris 2 3/4,

a Vortex 2x7 32
https://www.ebay.com/itm/325123590997

and a Leupold m8 2x
https://www.ebay.com/itm/165409807779

And I did not know about the truglo, that sounds just about right with small foorprint, unlimited eye relief and the good price so I will definitely look into that!

Thank you, I ordered a truglo red dot. I think I have the right one (TG8030B2) and I ordered direct from their awful web page with a 10% off coupon for 60 bucks. I will update this when it arrives.

Also, any recommendations for a fiber optic front sight?

I have had both, Burris trs-25 red dot, and Burris scout scope on my .44 mag 92. I prefer the scout scope, especially beyond 50 yards. At 74 yrs of age the magnification helps a lot.
