Question: How can you tell if your Rossi is ejecting too far to the right?
Answer: The brass hit you on the left shoulder!

If you modify the ejector spring you should be able to get it so it all says empty cases not too far and loaded cases pretty much at your feet.

I swapped in a Harbor Freight spring (kit is still about $5), empty 44 cases pop up about 3" and fall off to the right.
Action seems easier/smoother too.
