Rossi R92 Review of their 16.5" stainless 45 Colt

Post by 1895gunner »

I just uploaded my review from yesterday's range trip with the Rossi 45 Colt stainless 16.5" edition. My first time out with a Rossi so I thought you might enjoy my observations.

Nice review! Please allow me to nitpick.

The bolt safety (Thumb safety as you call it) is easy to ignore. However, it does overcome a common fault of levers - That every round in the mag goes through battery on the way out. After a long and unsuccessful day of hunting (My typical case), tripping the bolt safety prior to unloading provides some extra comfort.

Another feature of the 92 that bears mention is that it will take a round from the top when it’s dry.

+1
I only tried a "tactical" reload once with one of my Marlins 336 in 35 Rem. As I recall it took some fidlin' to get it done.

And ya know the safety feature I could really use? A magazine cutoff, commonly provided on semi-auto shotguns with tubular magazines. It would make it so much easier to empty the chamber in preparation for fence climbing or creek jumping. Or to change loads.

My last Rossi R92 purchase was a 44mag. I just traded it away yesterday. I don't know what I was thinking when I bought it. I should have got the 45LC.

Good review OP, thank you.

I dunno.... I tried both positions of that doohicky, and my goldarn thumb still aint safe one bit. I keep on pokin m'self in the eye with it when shootin' my Rossi, unless I hold it (my thumb) "just so". I don't think its a thumb safety at all. I bet it does somethin' simple instead, like lock the firin' pin!

Thank you for the kind words!

The "Thumb Safety" was a term I picked up on the Rossi USA website. I probably should have referred to it as the "manual safety" as is referenced in the owners manual.

In the schematic in your article it’s called a Locking Lever. In my head it’s the Firing Pin Disconnect Thingee. Whatever we call it, it’s an oddity. Thanks for the schematic!
