Shooting high

Post by Hydraglide »

I shoot 20 yard freehand competition, My 92 has a Marble Arms peep sight that is adjusted on the lowest setting, but still shoots high.
My question is, if I lower the amount of powder, will the POI come down,or at 20 yards will it make no difference.
I'm using 5grains of Titegroup at present, shooting 240grain hard cast lead bullets. If I dropped to 4grains would this lower my POI.
Thanks in anticipation.

It should change POI some but how much is anyone's guess and you're edging into stuck bullet territory.

Sounds like you're gonna need a taller front sight

Yes a taller front sight was a consideration, not one I really want to do as I like the original with the brass bead. If I did swap I guess a fibre optic could be a possibility.

At short distances, a faster bullet will shoot lower, due to less time in a rising barrel. At long distance, the slower bullet will have more "drop".

The fix is a taller sight up front, not ammo fid'diddlin'.

You should be able to get (or create) a brass bead sight that is taller.
Worst case you take a small diameter brass or copper rod.
Probably Polish the end of the rod first.
Cut off the disk second.
Third epoxy the disk to the back side of the front sight.
4th after ensuring the polish of the bead coat it with a clear lacquer or clear fingernail polish or at least some high grade auto wax.

I've been thinking about trading out my front sights for a version with a finer bead.
The ones that come on the Rossi are about right for a short range combat sight. Too large for picking off a small target at range.

A taller sight is the answer but I cannot comment on the load since I do not have a clue what cartridge it's for.

I've had good luck with a Marble Arms #105731 / 57W. It's a .570 tall front sight with a 1/16 gold(brass) bead.

Thanks Gunny, I like the look of that one, the brass bead looks like the original too. Just checked and Brownells UK offer that one, only £16 too. That'll do for me. :D
