I can laugh about it now. But, when you take some 18/19 year old kid who, in his whole life, has never seen a gun except on TV and in movies...give them an M-16 and well, their misguided ingenuity in solving their immediate problem sometimes pierces the stratosphere.

Gunny 268, I don't think I could have missed those dings and gashes if it came from the factory like that. I've broken it down and put it back together a number of times. The last time I cleaned it, I didn't break it down - just got a brush in there and ran a bore snake through it. I thought I'd be going back to the range soon. That was months ago. Might have missed something then.

Archer, I'm starting to think it might be ammo related. Maybe primers like you suggested. I'm going to look at my LCRX closer and see if I spot anything.

Thanks for all the suggestions and insights everybody. keep them coming if you can think of anything. I haven't heard back from Rossi in a few days, so that might be my next problem.

Dutch - Fair enough. We could speculate all day as to the cause of the dings. But, that "crater rim" you have around the firing pin hole has me baffled. Are you sending the rifle back to Rossi? Or are you going to dress the bolt face back to a level flat (not worrying about the dings)? Might not look pretty, but I don't think they would adversely affect chambering or extraction.

Gunny 268, my plan is to send it back to Rossi, but I haven't heard back from them in a few days. I just checked out my Ruger LCRX for any similar cuts or dings, but it's clean as a whistle. I was basically using the same ammo. Maybe not as much .357. So, maybe it wasn't bad ammo or maybe I burned it all up in the 92. I would consider cleaning up the face myself if I don't hear back from Rossi. Especially if you think it would be safe to shoot. It loads and extracts dummy rounds no problem.

The only way to damage a bolt face like that is mechanical impact.
Would Rossi ship a rifle with a bummed bolt face....
Well they ship rifles with bent barrels, excessive headspace, interrupted rifling, misaligned barrels....
So what is a bolt face with a few dings when production quotas get met.
Way down south in Arequipa, Peru till June 2020.
