Pleasant Surprise

I've had a 44 mag 92 for several years. I have plinked with it using 200 grain bullets with light loads of 231. Never really shot it a lot because, at 72, the open sights are all but useless.

Well, I recently put a red dot on it and loaded up some RD 265 grainers with a stout load of 296. At 50 yards they are well within an inch, and at 100 yards, with the red dot covering most of the the target, I still shot just over 3 inches!

Just ordered a Burris scout scope and look forward to trying it out.

I will likely use it for deer this year in a small woods that I hunt

I'm just a young fella at 66, I shoot USPSA matches, and just this year started shooting "Carry Optics" division, it's like cheating! Of course, everyone else in the division is doing the same thing! But, wow it's a boon to people with "mature" eyes!...

At 76 with 1 and 1/2 eyes any kind of optic is great. I have 2x red dots on 2 lever guns, 44 mag Henry and 38/55 Marlin and also one or two 22s. A bunch of scopes, they keep me in the game.

Make smoke,

I am 78 and blind in my left eye (my previous dominate eye) and I recently purchased a Rossi 92 Stainless and I know what you mean about the factory sights, same problem as you. I purchased a Skinner barrel mounted peep sight that worked for me at 40 yards. What is the brand/make of your red dot sight, maybe that will work for me beyond 40 yards?

My reddot is a Bushnell TRS-25. I have, since original post, replaced it with a Burris scout scope. I like it- it gives me much clearer view out to 100 or so yards.

This is the scope: https://www.burrisoptics.com/scopes/sco ... -2.75x20mm

I am so jealous of you guys. With an astigmatism in my right/shooting eye, I can't even use any kind of red dot sight. Tried shooting southpaw, but with a floater in the left eye, it just don't work for me. Getting old is just plane mean.

I have astigmatism, too. Some dots are less flarey than others, and I always have to keep the brightness lower than I’d like. Holographic sights are supposed to be immune to this problem. I’m thinking about the new Vortex, but it’s just as expensive as the EOtech.

I have to say, I'm enjoying the 1-6X or 1-8X or 1-9X 30mm tube scopes with illuminated reticles on rifles that I expect to be shooting short to medium ranges. Compared to a 1X dot they aren't cheap but they can be a bit more versatile.
