I am planning on using a Nosler 250 grain hollow point for deer hunting. My powder charge will be 24.5 grains of W296. According to the Nosler manual this will give 1382 fps out of a pistol. So adding another 200 fps from shooting it out of my 20 inch Mod 92 it will be at 1582 fps. My question is will this bullet hold together at that velocity upon hitting a deer in the shoulders. Should I reduce the charge to slow it down or is it okay. I know a lot of yawl like cast bullets but I want to stay with a jacketed bullet.

I'm betting that you'll exceed 200fps increase from a 20" carbine with 296. More likely you'll get closer to 300fps. I base this on my .357mag H110 loads from my pistol and then my 20" carbine. Using a 158grn bullet I got a 450fps increase so using a 250grn .45 cal bullet I'm guessing you'll see more of an increase than just 200fps.

However, for even better performance, check out some Lil'Gun powder. Again in a .357mag, Hodgdon lists it at about 20fps slower out of a pistol than H110/296, however, out of my 20" carbine it was a full 500fps faster (and faster still out of my 24" rifle) and that's with a much lower peak pressure because Lil'Gun seems to really come alive in a longer barrel.

BTW, Hodgdon lists 25.5grns as a max charge for Lil'Gun and 26.5grn as max with H110 with a 250grn Hornady XTP bullet on their on-line manual. Out of a 7.5" bbl, they show Lil'Gun 1,410fps and H110 producing 1,455fps and for "Ruger Only' loads which are just fine out of your Rossi's strong action. I think that either the Nosler or the Hornady bullets would do well in your levergun even if they see a 300fps increase over a pistol. Both are pretty durable.

For what it's worth a quick run of that load through Quickload shows 1754 fps from a 20 inch barrel.It also shows it exceeds SAAMI spec.

Ohio I got that load out of the Nosler Manual. It shows 25 grains of W296 as max. So 24.5 grains is under max. My fired cartridge is showing no signs of excess pressure.

That is specifically a Ruger and T/C Contender/Encore ONLY load.
So it IS well beyond SAAMI spec for .45 Colt.
I guess it may be possible to get a standard pressure load out of Win 296 but 296 is NOT typically a powder one would use for a standard pressure .45 Colt load.

Sierra high pressure handgun loads are listed for Ruger, Colt Anaconda, Dan Wesson and Freedom Arms and may not be at the same levels as Nosler since they are both for additional firearms and the Sierra bullet construction may not be the same as Nosler.

Sierra does list specific high pressure loads for the 94 Winchester and the Marlin carbine. With a 240 grain bullet @1.600" COL the load data goes from 21 grains to 23.6 grains using Win 296 (slightly less with H110) and Fed magnum primers.

Ohio not to be argumentative but I believe the Rossi 92 can easily handle Ruger only loads. It is a very strong action.

Im not familiar with the load but a rossi 92 will far exceed SAAMI spec for 45 colt. Quoting 45 colt SAAMI specs would make sense on a thread about an 1873 toggle link action, not a modern 92. Several of the top names have loaded Rossi's to 50,000 PSI

Thanks trekker thats what I thought. I am a very careful re-loader. Before I came up with that load I did a lot of research. W296 powder is pretty much H110 or vice-versa.

I don't doubt it for a second. The SAAMI spec is out of respect for all the Colt SAA and the like that are still alive and kicking and want to stay that way. Except for casual can busting loads everything I load for my Rossi '92 in 45 Colt come from the Ruger etc listings. For the same reason that I generally don't talk about the specifics of loads I've worked up to I figure it's best to mention Quickload's cautions. If you ever get to not being able to fin 296 or its twin H110 you might give Lil'Gun a try, I've switched most of my H110 loads over and I've been quite pleased, lower SDs, slightly high MVs and strictly subjective the gun seems to run cooler.
