Ranch Dog, that is good evidence to remove the high spot. I hear dlidster though. Can't add it back once it's removed.

Here's a couple pictures showing some more detail. As you can see, the high spot is directly in line with the hole in the bolt.

I was pretty amazed when I took the guide in my left hand and the bolt in my right hand and slid them across each other. The high spot immediately finds the hole in the bolt and comes to an abrupt stop in my hands. No wonder this thing locks up solid in the rifle when the pin is removed. With the pin in the bolt the high spot in the guide simply slides past the pin filled hole.

I'm tempted to just file an angle on each side of the bump so there is far less chance of it catching. It will be interesting to compare the profile of mine to others before I go forward with any modification.

So now that my focus is on the left guide I took a closer look at the hinge spring. I noticed that when I pressed the eyelet of the spring into the recess of the guide, the edge of the spring (indicated by arrow in picture below) hung up slightly on the edge of the recess. You should know that the eyelet had a rather tight fit. I'm thinking that when the guide and spring are installed a very small portion of the edge of the spring is getting pinched between the guide and receiver. I'm estimating this is pushing the guide toward the bolt about .01" and creating a condition where that bump in the guide is more apt to hang up in the empty hole in the bolt.

This is just my goofy theory at the moment to explain why my gun is locking up and why this issue seems to be unheard of in the forums. The bump seems to be an intended part of the Rossi guide design so I'll leave it alone for the moment. So with my attention on the spring I have filed the eyelet and it now fits nice and loose in the recess. I'm working up the courage to put it all back together to test out the fix:^)

Hello, I've had issues with my R92 as well. Are you sure the cartridge stop (hook shaped thing) spring under the left side cartridge guide is properly installed? That part of reassembly is shown just after the 7:00 minute mark in this video.

Oh brother, I made a huge mistake in my analysis. The bump in the guide is not lined up with the hole in the bolt. In other words It does not ride under the second ledge of the bolt (top of the hole). It rides under the first ledge of the bolt (bottom of hole). That has totally unraveled my cute theories on why this rifle is jamming up on me.

I realized this after I put it back together and it jammed up after about 50 cycles. At least now I have a good technique for taking it apart. Sorry for wasting your time. I'm going to have to think about this for a while.

You're not wasting anyone's time -- at least not mine. You'll get this taken care of. With the familiarity you've developed with the workings of a 92 you'll experience a eureka moment. We'll all enjoy it with you. Keep us posted.

OK, I think I found the cause this time! There's a couple pins on the bolt that retains the thingy that hooks the extractor spring collar. Sorry I don't know the proper name but here's a picture showing the bolt with the pins partially out:

Here's a picture showing the bolt jammed by the pins hitting the guide (lifter has been removed):

And, here is a picture of the guide showing the pins hitting on the hinge edge of the guide. You can see evidence of the pins rubbing across the guide as the bolt moves.

Both pins have an opportunity to hit on the edge of the guide and jamming the gun. This explains why sometimes I could open the action about an 1/8" and other times a little more (the distance of the second pin). If the pins can make it past the abrupt edge of the guide hinge then they seem to do fine along the more gentle curves of the guide.

I have never removed these pins so I was surprised they drifted out. I assumed they were pressed in from the factory. Has anyone else noticed theirs drifting out on their own?

So how do I lock these pins in place? Ping them with a punch or get bigger pins? Is it common to have pins that drift on their own?

I'm beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel:^)
