Just a comment on some of the online reviews of the CJ .45/.410 by Internet "experts" - just because I need a break from work and why not? LOL

One review said at "50 yards it wouldn't group in a pie plate and at a hundred I couldn't hit a sheet of plywood." Another couldn't get better than 3" groups at 25yds. Of *course* that was totally the gun.

When I zeroed the scope on my CJ we got it to shoot almost in the same hole at 25yds (seriously, it made a nice small cloverleaf), and 3" groups at 100. Could have tightened that up but we'd been shooting all day and I was beat.

What I did find is that like all guns each individual is unique. Mine has very poor accuracy with Winchester ammo. But Hornady FTX does great. My goal with handloading is to replicate the accuracy of the Hornady factory loads at a better price point. I have range time scheduled in a couple weeks. Going to use a chronograph and shooting vice and see if we can get some good data. If all goes according to plan I'll post the results.

Well, back to the salt mines!

My CJ grouped about 3" at 55 yards(50m) with magtech and some other brand I can't remember which I was happy with.

I have never done any proper load development & never fired mine off a bench or done a proper accuracy shoot. It’s always just a few quick shots unexpectedly & i’m Always giving people a go or kids so 20 rounds or so go pretty fast. But I know the accuracy is pretty average but still pig hunt able at 50ish yards. So far all 225gr Ftx handloads have been through & through on hogs up to 120lbs.
These aren’t a good rifle or a good shotgun, but they are a good little thing & suit my purpose really well. Hunting pigs with the help of our family pets ( dogs )
I also believe they make a great home defence Carbine for older people , younger people, women & anybody else that is of slight stature , or kind of afraid of powerful firearms. Very simple to operate, extremely lightweight, compact & definitely accurate enough out to 20 -25 yards. DEPENDING ON THE ROUNDS USED.

What ammo were you using to hit a 3 inch group at 55 yards, I found the plywood comment to be true.

S&b 230 hp at 1st we’re crap , but last time I took it out it shot unbelievably well. American eagle 225gr flat jacketed soft points , shot really well in my 454 casull Rossi 92 . That’s the next factory i’m Gonna try.

225gr FTX factory loads always give me good groups, even out to 100yds.

Ok here’s my latest experience & thoughts.
The accuracy is really hit & miss . But is acceptable enough if used within its limits. I have really tested for on target performance more then tight 45 colt groups. 1st off using shot or buckshot 20 yards is pretty much the limit of the circuit judge. 15y or less it’s at it’s best. It really seems that the longer rifled barrel really spreads the shot to much. I tested the circuit judge shot for shot against a 410 single barrel shot gun. The single barrel 410 at 25y was about the same as the CJ @ 20y consistently. Time after time the Winchester pdx 1 flat disc round is the most accurate out of the CJ @ 20y , but the #4 buck is terrible. Although nice & tight patterns from the 410 single. ( # 4 buck from the pdx round )
At 20 yards off hand the average 45 groups are 5 to 7 inches . Hit and miss . There was a bit of leading & that may be the cause of the hit & miss accuracy.
My hand loads are very disappointing so far.
All of my loads have unburned powder & don’t sound right. The same loads in my 454 casull work great. Still not giving up on this little circuit judge.

Thank you for the report. Honestly, I'm surprised that the firearm survives in the Rossi lineup.

True I thought it was discontinued??
A couple more thoughts i have regarding the circuit judge.
Been looking at the magtech brass 410 shells in my chambers. Now they are nice fit in the chamber & for length too. I’m thinking how about a healed cast bullet ??? That fits the chamber with ribs or “ Lee style “ lube grooves , that won’t give to much resistance through the forcing cones of the cylinders??? Surely can’t be worse that undersized bullets rattling down with lead cutting & all sorts of things going on???
Knowing well that only low density bulky powder can be used & still only at low performance.

Secondly: I can’t help but think there should have been a raging or only a raging circuit judge version , that’s also made ( like the S&W governor ) to use moon clips that can fire 45 acp. For starters the 45 colt is to expensive to plink with & the slightly cheaper lead cowboy loads lead the barrel badly . So you get expensive inaccurate shooting!
I believe Taurus is restructuring there quality control ??? If so please re-examine the CJ .
IF it was built around the raging judge with the addition of moon clip for 45 acp & clips for colt & or 410 & made in a 6 shot ( there is no need for concealed carry ) that would be more appealing to some.
Again if a raging judge survival / defence gun was touted. It could be made to fire 460 S&W , 454 casull, 45 colt +p+ & std 45 colt , 45 Schofield. Moon clips & 460 rowland, 450smc , 45 super 45 acp +p , 45 acp , 45 gap ect. + all of the 410 shells. Add to that the adapters available also. So that makes it a truely survival gun that can eat a huge variety of ammo in a emergency situation.
Using 460 S&W , 454 casull , 45 colt +p & 460 rowland ect would make it a true bear defence or anything defence gun . & even if we had the same accuracy issues we have right now , that’s a compromise we can live with considering it’s fine hunting accuracy at 40 yards or less & under 20 yards it’s defence accuracy is totally fine. Also adding in the 410 still works for snakes ect if that’s the main concern.
Being made stronger will make it SO much safer for working up unusual hand loads to make the gun work.
As long as it was strong & reliable more people would overlook the accuracy downfalls.
I would like to see so dovetail grooves or picatinny grooves milled into the top strap as well as rear peep or revolver sight groove as this is really a sub 50 yard or less gun. For me it’s perfect for sub 30 yards.
It’s my misus favourite gun & everyone’s kids & all the women’s favourite gut to plink with as well. Firing 410 & 45 colt at cans & steel ect just for fun is about as much bang as lots of average people can enjoy.
Also to the people who carry a sidearm in any 45 caliber could also carry this in say 460 S&W or 454 casull 300 + gr & have there sidearm for back up & still be able to fire the sidearm ammo in a pinch.
Well that’s my thoughts about this combination. I think Taurus has come up with some real good concepts & R&D
& I think they are just around the corner of something awesome.
Oh and for the higher pressure gas cutting from between the cylinder gap ! I can see that being a liability issue, although there’s a small area to add some R&D but I have already been practicing with a 2 handed pistol grip hold & found it to be fine. I know it’s a natural way to hold a carbine with forehand out front but it’s a party they are already half way down . I don’t know where to write a letter of encouragement, I have been looking. If someone knows where please leave a link . Cheers all.
