New here from nor cal, own an M92 with the 24” octagonal barrel, case hardened in 45 colt. I shoot single action .45 colts as well. And may be in the market for a nice modern revolver. The Rossi is a project that may end up cut down to 18” and more modernized with an optic and different furniture. Look forward to learning some new things

Welcome.

Better off "modernizing" the round barrel IMO.
If you start with a 20" or 16" you might even skip the barrel trim.
(They made 20" octagonal but curtailed them a few years ago. )
The RB is lighter, easier to mount a scope to, and potentially less investment up front.
The octagonal is heavier, not pure drilled for a scope mount, and a lot of folks dislike the Cresent butt plate.

I'd rather drill an octagon than a round barrel. My 20" round barrel is not factory drilled and tapped. No worry, I would never put a scope on a lever gun anyway.

Welcome.

Yes but the guns made over the last decade and a half or so are drilled and tapped on the round barrels and not the octagonal. Mounts are made for the round barrels but at best must be modified for the octagonal. The octagonal weighs about a pound and a half more than the round barrel.

I would love to have a RB carbine in .45 colt. But unfortunately, they are hard to find for me locally. I could buy another online and have it shipped to my FFL, same as I did my first Rossi or i would have never found one locally. The shipping and fees associated really shot up the price, to the point of not wanting to go that route until necessary. Which also brings up the idea of even switching calibers to a modern .357 or .44, I already own one single action .357 as well, and finding a modern double action is a breeze in those calibers. None of which is off the table, but I do love having something you don’t see every day, too.

I already have this rifle, and prefer the looks/feel of the octagon barrel. And I love a challenge haha. I’ve invested a hefty amount into learning to reload .45 colt from mild to wild. I have some wild ideas for the rifle including possibly a ported barrel or a flash hider/compensator, a rail on top the full length of the barrel, mounting a small rail via clamp to mag tube, some interesting ideas for furniture.
