Rossi 92 44mag and cast boolits

Post by oley55 »

Over the last five years I have been fussing and at times complaining about the 'overly' generous bore of my 44 mag Rossi (.433" groove needing a .434" cast boolit). The following is a partial cut n paste from another forum which clearly explains why, SAAMI specs for 44mag rifles ARE different from pistols:

The .44 Rossi 92s have barrels made to SAAMI .44 mag rifle specs. This means .431" + .002" groove diameter. Or put another way, .431 - .433" groove diameter. So yes, you'll see some variation within that range, and it'll still be within spec. Where this can be problematic for cast bullet shooters is when they size to .429" or .430". So no, the short answer is that the .44 carbine bores don't vary a lot--the issue is that the groove diameter is larger than they expect, and sometimes that results in poorly phrased complaints on various forums.

I thought I'd share that partial post for those folks trying to figure out why you may need such large cast boolits for your Rossi rifle.

mine do fine with 430.
but then again I didn't buy any Taurus specimens.

anyway the bigger diameter bores [431] are for the 444 not the 44.
it's just that some Brazilians can read English and some can't.

I'm one who is inclined to believe that they (Brazil) never heard of SAAMI.

what exactly does this have to do with accurately slugging a barrel? Are you suggesting .430" works in all 44mag Rossi rifles regardless of them slugging at .433"?

And there's NO reason for the .444 Marlin to have a bigger bore either since it fires the same exact diameter slugs as the .44 Mag.

no the rifles have a different diameter specified by SAAMI.
Rossi ignored that and went with the normal diameter for a revolver.
I thank them for that.
all of my Rossi made rifles have the smaller diameter including the 44-40 which is supposed to have a smaller 427 barrel.

if you look back in time at the 444 it was specified with a 431 and the factory ammo of the time come with the larger diameter bullets.

things just ain't as they are supposed to be all the time.
do you really think they were making 379 barrels for the 38-55's and 375 barrels for the 375 Winchesters?
or that 9mm's have 355 diameter barrels?
yeah uhhh no.

back to the discussion.
Taurus didn't.
they also messed with the twist rates.
I had some of them I got none, i'll keep to my wrongly built Rossi's.
I can't say nuthin about what they done they are not the only ones to make bigger bores on their 44's I got a 94 trapper and a B-92 I have to make 4305 diameter jacketed bullets for to get them lined out too.
I don't mind making the bullets so much but the tooling cost as much as they did.
