My question is. How much mv do you all think is needed for a 44 special out of a rifle is needed for deer at let's say from zero to 75 yards..thanks

RD recommends 1000 ft-lb of energy as a minimum, and I agree. I like a 240 gr bullet.

Yeah, that's my rule... at the terminal end. I've shot a bunch of deer & hogs withe less, but exact shot placement becomes everything. Not only hitting a spot, but understanding the critters innards and how to get to them.

RD is The Man.

Looks like your 255 gr bullet needs to be running at 1330 fps at 75 yds to have 1000 ft-lbs of energy. One might be inclined to run 44 Mag loads.

FWIW, I load 44 special for revolver with cast bullets but for rifle with jacketed, or coated bullets. Reason being the oddball bullet is a quick tip off to me to the hot loading. I don't know of any 44 special brass that won't take the hot loads, the limit is the firearm up to 44 mag pressures.

In a Rossi 92, hot 44 specials are just fine.
