Reloading my R92 44 Mag

Post by tiger1 »

I started reloading Sierra 250 Gr FPJ bullets for my R92, I know these bullets are for Metallic Silhouette but I use maximum load data in a 20" barrel for hunting elk. Has anyone out there tried this? I've got a custom 300 Weatherby that I used in Wyoming a few years back but I want to try the Rossi R92 for short range work around Payson, AZ in the forest.

Haven't loaded that one.

I do have a few boxes of 265 grain Hornady bullets designed for the .444 Marlin.
I bought them for the .444 and intent to use them with that but when I was looking for suitable bullets for that caliber I did note quite a few folks who had attempted to use that bullet in .44 Magnum who were not exactly happy with their results. But then they were expecting expansion.

Sierra does mention their 250 grain bullet as a choice for heavy or thick skinned game requiring deep penetration. They list about 1700 as max V they got out of the Win 94 with that bullet.

I took my R92 out yesterday with the Sierra 250gr FPJ bullets with maximum hand loads and my new Skinner barrel mounted Peep sight. At 40 yards my groups were deceit (2") and vertically in line after a small adjustment drift but hitting 5" low, the sight is suppose to be adjustable for elevation but I didn't have the right hex tools for the sight. I will try next time.
