Model 94 prices - 1964-1981 vintage.

Post by Model 52 »

I’ve maintained for awhile now that prices on these post 1963 but still pre AE and rebounding hammer Winchester Model 94s were going up in price given their attractiveness as shooters as they have the original quarter cock hammer “safety”.

I use that term loosely given that my dad managed to shoot himself in the chest when his Model 1892 in .32-20 slipped off the tractor and sheared that quarter cock notch when the hammer hit something on the way down.

I noted 5-6 years ago while buying my third excellent condition pre-64 Model 94 carbine for $550, that there was a mid 1970s Model 94 condition in very used condition for $425. I knew the Pre 64s were in a slump due to older collectors dying off faster than new collectors came along. That was flooding the market with estate sale pre 64s at buyer friendly prices. However, figured that $425 Model 94 was really more of a $300 gun. Yet surprisingly it sold within a couple weeks at the full asking price.

Yesterday I saw a Model 94 carbine made in 1976 with plain wood and a well worn receiver finish priced at $735. Even at today’s inflated prices, I didn’t think it was worth more than about $500 tops given it’s condition. However, I went back today as my son wanted to go to the show and I saw that Model 94 actually sell for the full $735.

I looked at completed sales on GB this evening for 1966-1981 Model 94s in similar condition and discovered it wasn’t overpriced. A 1970 model 94 in nearly identical condition sold for $680, a 1976 in nearly identical condition sold for $765, and a 1972 in better condition sold for $795.

$735 with no shipping or transfer fee was probably not a bad price.

Yet interestingly, I noted a correct 1956 Model 94 in over all very good condition but with typical blueing wear where the hand cradles the receiver when carrying it, sold on GB for just $647. Someone got a good deal.

It was a bit of an outlier compared to the pre 64 carbines selling for $700-$900 with things like rubber butt pads, and similar non original condition issues.

I looked at comparable sales for post war / Pre-64 Model 94s in original excellent condition similar to all three of mine and they are selling in the $1200-$1300 range. I paid $600 for the most expensive of mine. Doubling in value in 5-7 years isn’t bad.

But now I wish I’d have hung on to a couple of my $250-$300 1964-1981 Model 94s a little longer.

The last Model 94 I bought was a 1980-ish top eject. I bought it from a forum member at The High Road in 2009 for $225. That was a great deal even then; I don't think I'd want to pay the going rate now
