Offset Scope Mounts

Post by HarryAlonzo »

I finally had a chance to sight in my Model 71 scope. Leupold M8 6X atop a Williams Quick Convertible. Rotated the scope 90 degrees to allow clean ejections, so making windage and elevation adjustments is a mind bending experience. Currently have an ugly strap-on cheek pad to offset my head an equal amount. Receiver sight is usable with a bit of neck scrunching, or removal of the cheek pad.

Before you get too judgmental, the 71 was drilled and tapped for the side mount when I bought it. Between that, the recoil pad and the compass in the stock, the collectible value was greatly diminished. There's still a healthy shooter's market, though.

I'm thinking really hard about debauching a Rossi 92 with the similar, but somewhat more petite, Weaver side mount. Somebody stop me.

As a hunter, I think it makes a neat rifle extremely versatile. In one of my endeavors, I had to rotate a scope as well; it does make you think a bit while sighting in.

Dad's pre-serial Savage in .222 has a mount like that.

Being left handed I've never used an offset but as someone noted it does make a nice looking rig.

It does kill that ambidextrous feature. But I’m watching a 94 at auction that’s drilled & tapped on the right side. Never seen that one.

HarryAlonzo, are you able to use the open sights with the scope installed?

Yup. Since I sighted in the receiver sight first, I was able to align the cross hairs on the same point of aim as the front sight, and be on paper with the first shot.

When I was in high school the shop teacher used to clamp his .22 LR in a vise and pop a few round into a target and then move the crosshairs on the holes. I am nearly certain he did this on the weekend when nobody was around.

Today if he did that sort of thing, even IF nobody was within a mile of the school they'd hang him up by his thumb nubs.
