AeroPrecision has their M5 (.308 class AR) Stripped Lower with a complete Upper Receiver (ejection port door and forward assist) and a Lower Parts Kit on a Black Friday Deal for $270 so I decided it was time to start an AR-10/LR308 build.

Buddy of mine has been building for a while with both H&K, Rainer and AeroPrecision barrels and he says they all have performed well. He's a long range guy who is particular about his guns so I'll probably pick his brain another time or two.

Rainer was totally out of H&K tubes this past weekend.

It'd be nice if Midwest made a .308 G3 handguard but their lightweight one is pretty good.

This one will probably go together like the AR-15 with the White Oak barrel, not a big hurry but picking up nice bits and pieces as I find them until I'm ready to move on it.

As an update the parts listed above are in.
Buddy gave me an LR-308 carbine spring. I'll be needing to get the matching buffer.
Not sure if I'll run the DPMS carbine buffer or if I'll get one from Heavy Buffer dot Com.

Meanwhile as a note this receiver set is DPMS patter with the upper being 'high rail'.

Now THAT should be fun to shoot!

BCG will be AeroPrecision nickel boron coated (they claim by FailZero) with the fwd assist serrations.
They were running them $35 off. Still almost double the cost of a nice AR-15 BCG

Still picking my bud's knowledge from his prior experience.
He let me know that the Vltor BCM charging handle would need to be slightly modified but would be an easy fix. For the handguard I'm planning on running I'll need an extra long hinge pin.

So there are two paths taken on the AR-10/LR308 carbines. Armalite uses a longer buffer tube than the AR-15 to allow for the buffer and bolt to retract far enough. DPMS typically uses a AR-15 buffer tube with a special spring and short buffer to achieve the same basic results but allow any AR-15 carbine stock to be used.

I've been looking at using a MagPul UBR stock system. It's a bit heavy but should counter balance the barrel weight a bit.

Talked to MagPul and they said they've had particularly good results with the short buffer AND spring from Heavy Buffers Dot Com. They also said DPMS makes one that should work at around 2.5" long. From my prior research I think the Heavy Buffer product is about 5.5 ounces compared to 2.5 or 3 for the DPMS one.

I'm leaning toward the heavy buffer in spite of the additional cost.

Still a little fuzzy on the barrel down select. One bud says he's had good luck from various producers.
The other says he's had less than good luck with AR-15 barrels from the crew I was thinking about going with.

IF White Oak made them I'd probably already have one on order but they don't do the .308 AR class barrels.
