Rossi Rifleman

I must live under a rock... only just discovered today that the two leverguns I want can both be made from existing Rossi 92s.

I want a 10mm levergun... all I have to do is re-barrel a 357 magnum.

I want a 38-40 levergun... all I have to do is re-barrel a 45 Colt.

I found posts at different forums where folks said they have done these conversions. Anyone here have any experience doing this kind of thing?

I'm not sure, but does Rossi use the same receiver frame and barrel blank for the 38/357, 44 and 45?

If so, would it be possible to take a barrel from the 38/357 and rechamber it for the 38-40, then screw it into the 45 fitted receiver?

btw, I thought it odd that you mentioned the 10mm chambering for a levergun, but it does sound interesting

Well if we are going to do this lets do it in 9mm, would be a great match for alot of 9mm owners.

It is possible but the elevator work needed and head spacing and setting the barrel not alone getting it to function would be a tough nut to crack. I would love a Rossi ranch hand in 9mm. I've found the Henry 22 mares leg is shoot able shouldered. A 9mm ranch hand could be fun.

Then get another 357 barrel, chamber it for 10mm and put it on the 357 receiver? All that would be left over would be one barrel chambered for 45.

Rossi will have to tackle that.

The only levergun that doesn't require re-ingineering to make it a 327 is the Marlin 94 in 32. The Marlin can be reamed by hand, extending the chamber 1/10".

I'm a HUGE fan of the 41 Mag! There is something about this cartridge in a hunting rifle that 357 Mag, 44 Mag, and 45 Colt just doesn't have. I've designed, heavy cast bullets for the given cartridge, for each of these but the 41 Mag is the most impressive when it comes to dropping critters. To date, I have not had a critter remain on its feet when hit by the 265-grain bullet. I'm talking about 35 or so critters, feral hogs and whitetails.

Because of the performance, I used my Marlin 1894FG as a "guest" gun here at the ranch because I never had to trail an animal. Recently, I stopped its use by others because the value of the rifle is just out the roof. Even my ranch manager calls for it when he sees a nasty hog, he knows is is staying right where it is when the shot goes out.

About as good a description as any as why I would LOVE to see a 41 mag lever gun--made by anyone--make a revival! My experience is limited to firing the round through my 6.5 inch super blackhawk--but even there it performed better for me than my 44 mag super blackhawk hunter 7.5 inch--though some of that was probably due to the gun's more compact size and lesser recoil. Admittedly the rossi does a great job of taming the 44--but I suspect the 41 mag through a rifle barrel achieves a flatter trajectory and higher velocity than comparable 44 loads.
