Rossi Rifleman

Wolfe Publishing's Successful Hunter has a very good article on my favorite levergun cartridge, the 444 Marlin, in their July ~ August issue. It is written by a fellow that has shot them from the start and is a very good read for those interested in the cartridge. Unfortunately, the sample doesn't go deep enough into the issue to get to the article but it does have a interesting article about large feral hogs, many of which have met their demise at the far end of my 444.

I enjoyed the articles about hogs and crossbows but I didn't see an .444 Marlin talk... And I do still want an older .444 Marlin some day.

The only levergun in the 'rifle' category that vies for my 444 Marlin(s) as a Favorite, would be the Big Horn Armory 89, but I have barely gotten to 'know' it so far. Both are 'large rifles', both are in the 3,000 ft-lb class, and either one of them, paired up with a Marlin 1894 in 32-20, would pretty much 'cover it all'...

The 444 is a fine caliber. JES Reboring took it to another angle with the 405 JES which is the 444 case tapered down to a .412 groove. For a caliber .41 affectionado like myself it is a good step up from the 41 mag to the 414 Supermag in Marlin rifles. These two smallish caliber 41 brass pieces have little hope of propelling a 350 grain cast bullet with much authority. But the 405 JES just like the 444 has all the case capacity it needs to do so. Turns a 336 into a real Smasher even at both ends.

Another article (maybe reprint of same one) in Shooting Times this month on the 444 Marlin. Shows good results with the Speer 300 grainers - even in the 1:38 twist guns...

My first levergun was a Marlin 444S, which I still have. It was my deer rifle, successfully bagging my first few deer, until I decided to go with my scoped Weatherby 30-06 as my primary choice. I've recently bought a .357/.38 Rossi R92 and am just getting acquainted with it as a Cowboy action rifle. I prefer the pistol grip style of the Marlin over the straight grip of the Winchester/Rossi '92, but that's me.
