Re: I'm Going to Ruin this Marlin 336 in 35 Remington
The only thing I don't care for in the 336D is the porting.
In my Winchester 94 Trails End which is a 6 1/2 pound rifle in 450 Marlin I can understand porting.......you can't keep scopes on the thing even with the ports.
But why would the barrel of a 35 Rem need to be ported?.......it's not much stouter recoil than a 30-30.
I find that porting reduces the effective barrel length and funnels the muzzle blast back to the shooter.
Marlin dropped the porting in the 1895Gs (where there might even have been some justification for it) after the first year because of customer complaints.

I'm not sure why they ported it, it is pretty much a nonevent at the shot with this rifle. Porting was introduced in a the "Guide Gun" type of rifles (1895G, 1895M, 444P, 1894P, and select versions of the 1894S) in 1998 and discontinued with the run of 2001 rifle orders(through early 2002).pricedo wrote:The only thing I don't care for in the 336D is the porting.

I had the Marlin Stainless Steel version of your 336D, a SSLTD in 35 Rem. Sadly and regrettably I let it go in a swap for a 39TDS. I tried to buy it back but it had already been sold to another person. If I get another 35 Rem it is going to be the CVA Single Shot. I am patiently waiting for a detailed report from a friend that just bought one.

Yikes! that is a long bullet in a short necked cartridge. Are you certain it is 1.85" longklr wrote:Thanks. I had about a minute before work and took the following measurements: bullet, 1.85" . OAL will be 2.43.
If it is H335 is not the powder. The 35 Rem has a case capacity of 3.30 cc. seating a bullet 1.85" in length to an overall cartridge length of 2.43" reduces the case capacity by 2.22 cc resulting in 1.08 cc left for powder.
Quickload lists the RCBS 358-200-RN as .900" so I will use that bullet at 216-grains for the calculation until I hear back different. Here you go

I'm working on! Do you have my TLC359-190-RF bullet?Steelbanger wrote:I had the Marlin Stainless Steel version of your 336D, a SSLTD in 35 Rem. What I find with this rifle is that it is so light it actually torques clockwise (looking down the barrel) as the bullet is out. Never seen a rifle do that to the degree this little one does. The recoil is really light. They have a Decelerator type recoil pad on the rifle.
I'm really not sure what the status of these rifles are as I would like one in 44 Mag but they are not available. I'm thinking about buying the full size 35 Rem, the CR5804. GrabAGun is the only one that has them and you sure cannot complain about the price or shipping ($6). It was also the quickest online transaction and shipping I've experienced. Start to finish, the rifle was in my hands in 2 days.

Yes, I've got that 35 mould and IF I get another 35 Rem that is my bullet of choice.
Speaking of torque, long ago I had a Ruger No. 1 in 458 Win. That rifle would about twist out of my grip with heavier loads and recoil most fiercely at the same time. That is one rifle I never miss.

Yikes! I screwed that up. It is 0.85 for the bullet length.
Thanks for the data. I assume that is with mag primers?

The data will be good with that bullet length. No mag primers, just large rifle.klr wrote:Yikes! I screwed that up. It is 0.85 for the bullet length.

I didn't have much time so far this weekend, but I did manage to cut down the tang and slim the stock.
