Hunting load

Ok SIL is thinking if getting a R92 in 45 Colt. I need suggestions for a White tail hunting load. He wants something that he can stretch to 200 yds in a pinch. I am not too familiar with the long range capabilities of the Colt so hence the question.

My favorite would be Ranch Dog's 290 gr gas checked cast bullet over 25 gr of Lil'Gun. I've not taken anything alive with it however it does perform well for me. I've also haven't shot it more than 100 yards either since my 45 Colt still has iron sights and my eye is old.

The R92 45 Colt is not really a 200-yard deer rifle unless you are willing to put the "wood" to your loads and scope the rifle. I've killed one hog at that distance and would not hesitate to shoot a deer out that far. I use my TLC454-290-RF bullet and a 35.0K PSI load of Lil'Gun. This is not your run of the mill 45 Colt load.

The bullet is not available commercially nor are the molds. Lee have reopened their special orders so you could order it through them.

Not much different that the 44 Mag the rifle is chambered in.

200 yards is more like 30-30 territory. A heavy load in the 45 Colt would work but the trajectory would have to be known and practiced. I would suggest the 24 inch barrel and a 4x scout scope like Ranch Dog uses.

It is actually not as hard as it might seem. I sight my rifles in at 100-yards and as the distance increase, start holding high on the heart lung overlap. At 200 yards with the 45 Colt, the horizontal crosshairs are held along the back of the deer or hog and the bullet will drop right through the heart. I find the 45 caliber bullets extremely predictable.



I don't think that the 24" barrelled R92s are drilled and tapped for a scope base or at least Rossi only offers a base for the round barrels. I know the extra 4" of barrel has been discussed on the forum but I thin the added weight is not worth any possible gain with these pistol cartridges. If I had it to do all over again, all my rifles would have the shorter Trapper barrel.

Hey RD for these hotter loads with Lil Gun are you using standard or magnum primers???
