I am glad I kept is the Rossi 92 in 45 Colt. It was touch & go for a few days because I had a guy offering the basic M&P AR, in trade for it. Then another guy waved a K22 at me, but the gun had been Bubba'ed and that killed it.

Anyhow I dug this old rifle out and promptly fell in love with it again. It had the usual mismatched stock & forend, so I walnut stained them both until they roughly matched and then rubbed in four coats of Tru Oil.

I put a 0.410 tall, 1/16 Marbles brass bead front sight in it and that makes for a much finer sight picture than the OEM brass hubcap did. The way it all worked out, I get a 100 yard zero on the lowest notch and 200 yard zero on the next one. These being with my bulk 45 Colt load that scoots at Lee 255 grain lead Flat Nose 1180 fps from this rifle. Right after taking this photo it put three of them into 5 1/2" at 200 yards.

I can get an un-fired M&P locally for about $450 but not an R92.

Nice work.

The one pictured in this topic is not the old style gun but the treatment of the wood sure makes it look vintage ... which I favor.

Thanks a bunch guys. I did the same thing with that lemon .357 I had a few years ago, and really liked the outcome.

This 45 has been a great 92 so far and I figured it deserved the same treatment.

There's a number of 45 Colt 92"s on Gunbroker. I have 2 and love both of them

The New Vaquero was a nice 45 Colt, but not up to the loads I shoot in this '92. A factor in its departure was the fact I caught myself slipping a '45-70 Lite' load in the cylinder one day, while shooting it and the carbine. I'd decided to go back to a large frame 'Old Vaquero' and for some time have been looking for a pristine example with the 4 5/8" barrel. I could find good candidates but the screws had been buggered, sights filed etc.

I finally found a mint '99 Vaquero on Gunbroker. After going over it inside and out, there is no indication it was ever fired. No screw on it has ever had a screwdriver in it. The trigger pull is 3# measured at the tip of the trigger- no creep and damn little over-travel. The action is crisp and precise, lockup ls tight. I didn't have time to measure the barrel-cylinder gap but it is tight. I hope the Ruger employees who put this together didn't get canned for letting out a top notch piece.

About the only thing 'predictably Ruger' was its .450 cylinder throats and that's easily corrected. Shooting over one knee at 50 yards, it put a cylinder-full in just under four inches.

I looked for an Original Vaquero .45C blued/CCH locally for three years but the 2-3 I found were incredibly overpriced for a Ruger (in the $600-700 range) so when I found a Uberti Cimarron Evil Roy in the same range I bought it instead...and no transfer bar.

I still haven't found my .45C R92. I'm picky and generally only buy from individuals.
