Tested a couple of 223 hunting ammo options, using 5 gallon rectangular water buckets at 100 yards.
Speer Gold Dot 64 grain soft point and Wolf Military Classic 62 grain hollow point
were both fired from a Mini 14 with an 18 inch barrel.
Retained weight of the Gold Dot soft point was 61 grains out of 64.
Recovered weight of the Wolf Military Classic hollow point fragments was 50.5 grains out of 62.
The water buckets were 12 inches long, with openings to allow the bullets
to pass through the plastic water bags without first having to pass through hard plastic.
The larger lead and copper bullet fragments of the Wolf HP were found in the second bucket,
with the smaller fragments remaining in the first bucket.
The sides and bottom of the first bucket were blown out by the explosive water expansion
caused by the Wolf hollow point bullet. There was no damage to the second bucket.
The Gold Dot bullet was found in the second water bucket.
There was no damage to either the first bucket or the second bucket
from the water expansion caused by the Gold Dot soft point bullet.
