"First shoot a success!" A look back and range report
Was really worried about taking my new 92 357 for its first shoot this weekend but out of the box it fed fired and ejected like a champ! Very accurate (albeit at 10yds, 25yds next week) and light recoil even with 357s was absolutely a pleasure. Was pleasantly surprised by the stock semi buckhorn sights which i adjusted to well.
I did have slight difficulty loading rounds into the magtube but i feel that was operator error more than anything though time will tell
Cant wait to go back!

Re: First shoot a success!
Congrats on the new gun. There are some mods you can do that will make loading a little easier. Search YouTube ...
I think the 357 R92 is the funnest gun for me. I have 3 of them and they all have had little problems. It's seems that the longer I have them the better they get.
Did you try 38sp rounds?

Had the same difficulty on mine, until I narrowed the gate spring to relieve some of the tension. Doing that modification made It stop chewing my finger tips as an added benefit.GRV01 wrote:I did have slight difficulty loading rounds into the magtube ...

Yeah that loadgate ia def stiff out of the box. Adjusting the tension ks something ill jave to look into. I k ow atleast a few times i was unknowingly trying to load the nose of one round into the base of tje other at an angle
And yup fired 38s aswell which turned it into a plinker. Best of all wifey enjoyed the heck out of it too. Im not opposed to her gwtting her own *grin*

Re: First shoot a success!
wow, looking at this thread six and a half months later was interesting
so yesterday was a day of firsts when I took my 20" 357 to the outdoor range for the first time to shoot 100 yards, also for the first time to shoot steel, again, for the first time. It was just me and an old timer at that particular range (this place has like twelve) in the early morning humid heat of Homestead, FL just south of Miami. Speaking of the old man it was an amusing comparison since I had my 1892-style lever action pistol caliber carbine with iron sights and he was shooting a modern whizbang magazine fed, muzzle braked rifle with a scope that looked like it cost as much as my Rossi
I wanted to burn through the last of my first reloads that I had made with the swaged Hornady 158gr LRNs I had bought totaling about 140: 60 with HP38 and 80 with HS6. When I switched to the HS6 I was hitting consistently maybe 2/3s the time but those HP38s while light and accurate at close range were having a hard time meeting steel (less than half!) it seemed and Im not sure why. It cant be because of low velocity causing them to hit low could it? Would make sense though as the faster, and almost certainly flatter shooting, HS6s were making that plate sing. It being my first time shooting that distance I had a tough time keeping the smile off my face. The fact that it was pouring sweat made it easier to conceal
Speaking of which I guess I ate too much salt the night before as I left an unsightly stain on the stock where my cheek rested, any tips on cleaning that?
in any case it was a great shoot and I had a blast. I never thought id say it but my blued Rossi M92 in 357 with the 20" barrel is my favorite possession!

Re: First shoot a success!
Hah! Put a real finish on it. I was on a nilgai hunt with my RG4570 and a heavy thunderstorm came overhead. I lasted about 15 minutes and I was hunkered down over my rifle trying to protect it. After it passed and things were drying out, I noticed that the stock on my rifle looked like a calico cat. The stain had run onto my camo pants. The good thing is that the rubberwood is very easy to work with. Time to seal it up.GRV01 wrote:Speaking of which I guess I ate too much salt the night before as I left an unsightly stain on the stock where my cheek rested, any tips on cleaning that?

A good method for cleaning an oil finish is GoJo hand cleaner (non-pumice) and 0000 steel wool. Don't know how it works on Rossi factory finish, but what've you got to lose?

Thanks for the tip. I've started refinishing my Win M94 and have made little progress with the oil finish. I will give the GoJo a try!HarryAlonzo wrote:A good method for cleaning an oil finish is GoJo hand cleaner (non-pumice) and 0000 steel wool. Funny how that happens.
I took my cousin and her husband to the range with an assortment of firearms to shoot. He's an old PA farmboy who has not shot in fifty years. We worked our way through the handguns first and when he got to the .357 Rossi 92, it was kismet. He would not put it down until all the ammo was gone, and even then held it a while longer.
Glad yours is working out.
