Finally a darker finish

Post by golfish »

I've never been able to get any of my R92 stocks to accept any kind of stain. It always just wipes right off.

I bought some stripper made to strip stain and clear coats. A few treatments with the stripper, a couple rounds of Minwax dark Walnut stain, 3 coats of Tru-oil and I got this.

Looks great, much better than most of the factory attempts.
Might I ask what you used to strip stain and finish? I have a little cz457 that has gorgeous wood and thay drowned it with a dark stain and whatever topcoat they use. If I could remo e all of that and apply my finish it would look even better than it does now.

Looks like the OEM finish on my older (late '80's) pre-safety Rossi.

I used to think the splotches were from the stripper but it's from the old finish not being compatible with the new. I haven't tried on a Rossi but I have redone a 10/22 with "hardwood" and several Marlins.

My .44 Magnum Rossi Puma 65 Mi(Stainless) is much darker.
Rossi-65-02.jpg
I have tried to lighten it somewhat, after that picture was made.
It is a Pre Safety model, marked Armadeo Rossi.

Mine was bought from Frankonia in Germany, in 2011.
It might have been in Germany, for several years.
