Spring thickness on 2020 rossi 92,s in 357 mag.

Post by al1460 »

Finally took my 357 92 to the range this past Fri. First time out with it. The trigger pull was around 7-10 lbs, w/ lots of gritty creep. Accuracy of the rifle, not me, was really good even with the bad trigger. When I got home I tore into it and discovered both the trigger spring and the loading gate spring were much thicker by 25 thousandths than my earlier 92 in 45 colt.
Thinned the loading gate spring down too the same thickness as the one on the 45, plus trimmed 3 inches off the mag tube spring that improved the loading greatly.
Put shims under the trigger spring and that helped a little, anyone with a 2020 rossi experience any of the same problems?
Next I am planning on taking a fine grit stone to the trigger and hammer sear interface to polish the surfaces, hopefully that will help. Not planing on removing much if any material. Antyother suggestions?
Thanks.

My suggestion is be very careful as parts are scarcer than unicorn tears.

Out of curiosity what was the thickness of the old unit?
25 thou is quite a bit when you are looking at a flat spring.

I'd be a bit surprised if they increased the thickness by 25 thou (.6+mm) while keeping the material, heat treatment and everything else the same without some reason...

IF they changed the material or the heat treat then thinning down the leaf might have an impact on durability.

The load gate spring on the older 45 colt was .o24, on the newer 357 it was .o34. I took the new one down to .028, this seemed to lighten the force needed to push a cartridge into the gate by about 30%. Reducing the length of the mag tube spring probably helped also.

Looking at my first post I think maybe I should learn to read my dial caliper properly.

Well, at least you know what was throwing me. Your second post makes quite a bit more sense.

I followed the instructions that came with a "Palo Verde" spring kit. They advised to take some of the bend out of the trigger leaf spring. Worked so well that I ended up doing the same to my other two Rossi 92s. All three rifles now have a crisp 3.5 lb. trigger pull. Didn't need to do any work on the sears.
