Got an idea for a butt cover

I'll start by saying I have a Rossi 92 20" barrel with the "C" shaped steel butt plate. I just bought a life time supply of RD 290 gr bullets and I've read they are painful which I believe beyond a doubt. Now due to the fact I use this gun also in cowboy action shooting which means no butt plates other than a leather cover so no permanent modifications allowed. So hear is what I've come up with to use for hunting with these heavy loads.

I'm think of taking a slip on type limb saver can cutting it to fit the "C" shape of the butt. At this point I also don't want to add much length to the stock either so figured I would square it off (or leave it flat) then sew it into a leather strap on type cover. It would give a look similar to say a 454 92 in the shape of the butt. My only doubts are on the corners of the "C" as there it would be the thinnest padding. Any input on this would be appreciated as I know someone that can do the leather work but would need to get an idea of the thickness of padding it would need.

Picture below is a quick sketch where the gray would be the cut pad that would be held in place by the leather.

I dont see why this would not work. It seems to me that having the padding there in the thickest part would help with recoil considerably. That being said, I dont think the cut down pad would have as much effect as say cutting the stock off square and installing a full pad but for what you have to work with and the fact that you need it removable I would say its certainly worth a shot. That is how I would build it if I were making one for you.

Dothat and then cover it in leather and you could use it for both couldn't you?

I actually have one now order with a full 1/2" of padding following the C shape with a really good recoil pad inside the leather. He normally only uses a 1/4" but doubled it for me upon request and no additional charge. I will post pictures of it on the rifle when it is finished and in my hands as well as review of how well it works.

I've got all my fingers and toes crossed in the hope that no one will say that that joec's butt cover pad is an illegal extension.
I don't know about the lesser 92 calibers but the butt pad would certainly make a 92/454 a more humane firearm to shoot especially with full power loads.

The one 92 454 I looked at had a butt similar to the one on my RG 45-70. I didn't buy it due to the fact it was stainless finished. Something about nickle, stainless or bright guns just don't personally like. I won't be using it in cowboy action shooting however for hunting it very well might save my shoulder a bit of punishment. As for extension a half in of recoil type rubber (sorry can't remember the name of the stuff but used in the space program) covered by leather isn't much extension and about the same as the slip on limb savers sold for shotguns.

I was being facetious (sarcastic) about the illegal extension.
If you're butt padding a Rossi 92/454 your shoulder will than you if you make the padding as generous & recoil forgiving as possible.
Even the heavier 44 Mag & 45LC oads can give you a good thump. :D
My 454 burns fast pistol powder (H110 & W296) and gives me a sharp painful jab VS the "push" of a magnum rifle burning slower powder like H4831 or RX22.

I realized you was being sarcastic and just forgot to put the emotion on which I often do.

In all honesty I've fired Ruger only loads through my Rossi 92 45 Colt as well as some other factory ammo such as the Buffalo stuff. Now other than the Buffalo none has bothered me much. When Ranch Dog mentioned how hard it was on him I will take his word for it and get some protection also.

I really wished I still had the sight for this stuff but some one posted it a while back. The make recoil pads that are thinner but have more recoil absorption than other materials. I actually mentioned it to the guy making it and he researched it and found it was fairly inexpensive and was available in several thicknesses in sheets. He picked up the 1/2" thick sheet which is the thickest offered on that site and we figured it would be about as heavy as the what I have on my RG 45-70 when you also add a layer of leather between the steel butt plate and pad followed by another layer of leather between it and my shoulder. Total would be about 3/4" to 7/8" of padding would be a good guess. If it isn't enough He said he could double it also and I decided to keep the C shape instead of the filling design as show originally but he could do both. We felt really that the ends would cut into me if we did the straight method as I had shown instead of the full pad all the way across it..

I'm pretty recoil-proof myself.
The only gun that brought water to my eyes was a 10 gauge single shot firing a 1 3/4 ounce rifled slug I fired as a teenager on a farm at a tin can mounted in a pile of manure ........I didn't hit the can and I did NOT ask the grinning farmer for seconds.
The abused & battered old shotgun had a plastic butt stock cap (no recoil pad) on its multi chipped & gouged stock........it looked like the farmer used it as a fence post-hole auger when he wasn't hunting with it.
It was owned by a farmer friend of my dads (a behemoth of a man) who I believe to this day was the last living Neanderthal.
I own and fire comfortably a chopped 21" bbl (7 3/4 pounds) Remington M700 in 416 Remington Magnum & a 18" bbl (7 1/2 pound) Savage model 116 "Alaskan Brush Hunter" rifle in 375 Ruger.
Recoil comfort level is a personal thing...........I've heard "shooters" complaining about the recoil of a 357 Mag rifle  ..........time to give up the hunting fields & start hunting the meat aisle at the grocery store.

I can relate to that for sure and fired a friends 10 ga once which will set you on your rump if you aren't prepared for it or small in size.
